Student Voice at Craigburn

Over the first five weeks of this term, classes have been working out who their elected student council representatives will be. You may have noticed some classes starting to share who their representatives are through class blogs, SeeSaw, newsletters etc. Later this term, a whole school assembly will recognise this year’s representatives.

A  Student Representative Council (S.R.C.) is a group of students in a school elected by their fellow students to represent all students in the school and who organise ways for students to participate in school life. S.R.C.s work democratically to represent the student body in school decision-making. With assistance from a staff member, students work together to improve school life and to introduce students’ ideas.

At Craigburn, two levels of ‘student voice’ are implemented – S.L.E.G. (Student Leaders Executive Group) and S.R.C.

SLEG (Year 6/7 students) – acts as an executive group. Their role is to lead S.R.C. meetings and coordinate school and community activities through appropriate decision making processes. Gender balance / equity is aimed for wherever possible.

Students are elected through an application process from each Year 6/7 class.

Selection process consists of:

  • Nomination
  • Application
  • Presentation to class
  • Selection determined by class teachers/students using agreed criteria

SRC Representatives

Each class elects two representatives per semester – two reps and two proxies (back ups) each semester to share information from class and school level.

Male / female representation required.

Each class to individually determine their election process.

Role: to share communication between class meetings and whole school SRC meetings.

Meeting times

SLEG – each week        SRC – fortnightly

Reminders will be in student notices and older buddy classes will collect junior students.

Meeting Process

Elected members of S.L.E.G. will chair and record minutes during S.R.C. meeting and these will be passed on to S.R.C. class representatives that day in order to be shared at their next class meeting.
