Whole Group Reading

Today we continued our daily reading activities. We always start with our reading sessions by reading a Big Book together and then move onto our own reading tasks. This week we are reading The Fun Bus by Jill Eggleton. We have a set of sight words that we need to focus on during our reading time. We had a bit of fun with it today – we wore huge glasses to LOOK for the sight words and we worn bunny ears to LISTEN for the sight words. When we read or heard them we needed to click our hand clickers to show we’d found them! It was a great effort by everyone and lots of fun!! Now we’re all looking forward to having another turn at wearing glasses or bunny ears.

Here’s some photos of our session.

What did you think of our reading session today?

Daily 5 – Read with Someone

Here’s a great little video of Jackson and Liam reading with each other. They both had the same Zac Powers book and took turns reading it. They showed how to share the reading, how to sound out words, tried to use expression when they read and read at a steady pace.
They were also very brave to do Read to Someone in front of the whole class! Congratulations Jackson and Liam!

Bookweek 2012

Last we we celebrated Bookweek in lots of different ways.
We read lots of the Bookweek books, worked with Mrs Langham in the Library (we read a Bookweek book called A Bus Classed Heaven and presented ourselves on a bus as community members – linking to our current inquiry unit), presented our learning at the whole school assembly, held a book sale – advertising books to our classmates and modelled this book sale for Miss Hunt’s Year 2 class, Paul read his own book called “A Sharing Community” at the assembly, we brought favourite books from home to share with our classmates and had a dress up day on Friday – we came dressed a book character fro on of our favourite stories.

Here are lots of photos showing you our fantastic week. We had so much fun celebrating books!

What was your favourite activity from Bookweek?

Bookweek 2012

This week is Bookweek. The Children’s Book Council of Australia hold an annual competition to see which is the best book in a variety of categories. There are a number of books nominated in different sections and then the judges vote for a winner.

Our Library is having every class visit the Library this week to work with Mrs Langham on lots of different Bookweek activities. Every year level is doing something different. Stay tuned for some photos later in the week, after our visit on Thursday.

We have been reading lots of the books in the lead up to Bookweek and will be having a dress-up day this Friday. We are able to dress as any character from a book – our imaginations are running wild!!! We will be showing our costumes to the rest of the school during our whole school assembly on Friday morning.

Here’s a poll for you to vote on your favourite book for the Early Childhood Books. Please vote for the book you enjoyed reading.

Here’s poll for Picture Book of the Year – vote for the one you really liked.

The Reading Goes On!!

Every morning we read!!!

We LOVE to read. Here’s some photos of us working on developing our reading skills. We’re using the Daily 5 Reading Cafe and have started to make our own daily reading choices and setting our own reading goals on what we’d like to improve! Some of the areas we  have chosen to develop are:

  • increasing fluency
  • checking for understanding
  • improving our decoding skills
  • back up and re-read
  • flip the sound
  • use the pictures/ diagrams as clues and see if they match the pictures
  • read with expression
  • read at a steady pace
  • predict what will happen next

We’re using lots of technology to develop our reading skills, like iPads, iPhones, computers and the Interactive Whiteboard.

Some of our students have really found series of books they love. From our book sales we’ve spread the word about different books that others may like but have never heard of. Lucy, Maisie and Emma are loving the Bindi and animal novels, Will and Oscar are enjoying the Dirty Bertie novels, Rory and Nathan are enjoying Dairy of a Wimpy Kid and Ned has just discovered the Famous Five books after reading some Roald Dahl novels. Lots of our students are discovering “good fit books” everyday. Mrs Langham and Amelia, in the Library, have been really supportive and helpful to find new books and reserve books we are interested in- we’re lucky to have their support!

Here’s one of this week’s reading sessions.

We also have a “new read to self” record – we can read for 36min & 17seconds without anyone moving or being distracted – hoooooorrrrayyyyyy!!!! We had to stop at 36minutes because we needed to move onto a different activity.

What are some books that you think we might enjoy? We’d love to hear your ideas and suggestions.

Book Sale!

Today we held our very first book sale!
The students were asked to bring along a book that they would like to “sell” to the class. Obviously we didn’t actually sell our books for money BUT this book sale was about advertising and promoting books you’ve liked to others in the class.

The children had a week to decided which books they would like to “sell” to their classmates and had to decide what would make others interested in reading a new book. We’ve noticed that we all like to read but sometimes we get stuck reading the same series of books or the same type of stories.

A book sale is a great way to introduce readers to different kinds of books – maybe some that they wouldn’t have thought to read before.

We had 6 very brave people who joined our very first book sale. They were Emma, Lucy, Sarah, Oscar, Nathan and Maisie. Each of these student talked about a different book or in some cases they couldn’t pick just one book and brought a few along. Thanks to the 6 fantastic students who had a go at our very first book sale – we were impressed with your talks. Emma had even written notes to help her speak in a clear way to us.

These students talked about:

  • what the story was about
  • who it would be a “good fit book” for
  • what made it an interesting story
  • who might like it
  • the pictures matching the words
  • if it was part of a series of books
  • who the author was
  • where the book came from – the school library or our community library
  • and lots of other information.
Here are some photos of the presenters – congratulations guys on a wonderful booksale.
Our audience loved hearing about these books and are going to find them in the Library at school or our Community Library.

Book Sale on PhotoPeach

What books can you recommend for our class to try reading? We’d love to hear about some new titles.

Have you filled a bucket today?

Today we read a book called “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McLeod.

It’s a book about that is a guide to daily happiness for your child.

We read the book as a whole class and just loved it. The concept of the story is

Everyone carries an invisible bucket that holds our good thoughts and feelings. When our  buckets are full, we feel happy and when our buckets are empty, we feel sad.

The message from the story taught us that everyone has an invisible bucket and that all of us can fill other people’s buckets – being a bucket filler. By adding to someone else’s bucket you also fill your own bucket too. BUT if you are negative or don’t behave the right way you are a bucket dipper and sadly your bucket will be empty. Bullies are bucket dippers. The best thing about bring a bucket filler is that it doesn’t have to cost a cent. It could be a smile, a high five, a little thank you note….. and so many other ideas. Aren’t these great positive messages to send to each other.

We ADORED this book. We’d love for everyone to read it. We were so excited about the story and it’s message that we just HAD to make our own buckets straight away. We’ve even loaned the book to some other classes so they could fill their buckets too.

Here are our buckets.

Have you read the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? We’d love to hear what you thought of the story. Please let us know.

Can you make any suggestions on how we could fill other people’s buckets?

Please leave us a comment on the blog – it will help to fill our buckets!!!

Musical Chairs Reading

Today we tried an activity we’ve never tried before.

For something new in reading we played “Musical Chairs Reading”.

We took all of our chairs outside and Ms Sporn placed books onto the seat of each chair. She played music and when the music stopped we needed to stop, sit down and start reading! Then when the music started again we walked around the circle until it stopped again – then we sat down and started reading again. We had a great time!! It was lots of fun and something different to develop our reading interests.

It was a chance for us to read books we may not normally choose. Some of us discovered some new authors or series of books we’d like to add to our book boxes.

Here are some photos of today’s session. Check out our video too.
