Lauren A. competed as forward hand (with skipper Damian Carey) in the Mirror Dinghy National Championships at Kingston Beach Sailing Club, 20 minutes south of Hobart on the Derwent River in Tasmania (Mirror is a 12 foot red sailed dinghy with skipper and crew) just after Christmas.
Damien and Lauren had days of light winds and up to strong 25-35 knot gusts over a series of 10 races in 5 days. Their main sail ripped out of the mast prior to one start and they had to be towed in, luckily the race was abandoned due to strong winds. It was very tight and close racing with Damien and Lauren equal on points with a N.S.W boat prior to the last race. Damian and Lauren had to win the last race to take out the championship – and they narrowly did, beating their nearest rivals.
Lauren demonstrated great skill and determination to complete the gruelling series throughout her first Nationals and only second season sailing. She previously gained 1st placed gaff rigg Mirrors and 4th overall in the State Championships the previous season. Well done Lauren!
