The department has introduced a policy for the use of mobile phones and personal devices in government schools. The policy applies to students’ mobile phones and personal devices including smart watches. The policy does not apply to our school’s Bring Your Own iPad program.
The department’s advice is that primary school students are not allowed to use their mobile phones and personal devices during school hours. However, students can continue to bring their mobile phones and personal devices to school:
- to ensure their safety while travelling
- so that parents and children can contact each other outside school hours.
The Department has developed a ‘Student use of mobile phones and personal devices’ policy template for all schools to follow, containing the following key elements – Purpose, Mobile phone use for primary school students, Storage of personal devices, If the student does not comply, Roles and responsibilities, Communication and Review. From the start of Term 3, schools are required to implement the new policy.
In developing the policy for Craigburn, we have already sought feedback from school staff and the Governing Council. We are in the process of sharing this information with our senior students.
We encourage families to read the Department’s position and policy on the use of mobile phones and personal devices by visiting their information page.
If you have any questions or would like to share feedback regarding the Department’s policy, please contact us at school by phone 8270 4144 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
