The Weekly Wrap – Term 2 Week 4 – 2023

Weekly Wrap 2023 – Term 2 Week 4

Thanks to our Student Leaders who kindly gave up their early morning sleep-in to be at school for an early start in preparation for National Walk to School Safely.

A highly successful day was had by our Cross Country team at the Southern Heights Cross Country Event at Belair National Park last Thursday. Congratulations to Lola C, Claire S and Caitlin S who will be participating as part of the Southern Heights team at the State Championships at Oakbank Racecourse in June.

A shout out to Mr Fergusson and for training and preparing the team – those early morning starts certainly paid off.  A shout out to Karen Pettman for the organisation behind the scenes. Regardless of where students finished in their year level races, it was rewarding to see such a positive team spirit amongst students and school families who supported on the day. Well done to all – this was one of our greatest representations of students participating in the event.

Craigburn Pedal Prix Team had a great start to their 2023 season coming third and fourth in the Primary School mixed division. The weather was kind to them and all had a great time supporting each other in true Craigburn spirit.

We would like to say a special thanks to Ryan Ratzmer for his commitment and transporting the bikes to and from Tailem Bend. His support ensured the success of the day. Another shout out to Mark Nankevill who was Craigburn Track Marshall for the day. Without their support and of all parents the day wouldn’t have been possible. The team is looking forward to their next race on 18 June.

Paul is currently on leave taking a well deserved break. In Paul’s absence I will be Acting Principal and Janine McKay will be supporting me in leadership.

Wishing you all a great week ahead.

Nicky

National Reconciliation Week

Once again National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is fast approaching. NRW, 27 May – 3 June, is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to contribute to building a reconciled Australia. It also gives people across Australia the opportunity to focus on re- establishing friendly relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

The 2023 theme for National Reconciliation Week is ‘Be a Voice for Generations.’ The theme encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.

Our Reconciliation Week Assembly will be held on Friday 2 June 2 @ 11.30 pm. All parents are welcome to join us for  our Assembly.

Volunteer Week – Morning Tea

Last week represented National Volunteer Week (NVW) – an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. Volunteering Australia has announced the theme for National Volunteer Week 2023 – ‘The Change Makers.’

We have been extremely grateful for the excellent volunteer support we have received so far this year, with support in many school activities and events, including – excursions, swimming, sports coaching, canteen, Mother’s Day stall, Sports Day and more.

This  Thursday 25th May, we invite Craigburn parents, carers and friends to a special volunteer presentation and morning tea – as an opportunity to connect with our parent community and share how to get involved in being a school volunteer.

This will be held in the Library at 9.00am.

Please save the date / time, Thursday 25th May – 9.00am – 10.00am.

To register your attendance please, email the school – dl.1226.admin@schools.sa.edu.au  or phone 8270 4144.

National Simultaneous Story

NSS – Craigburn students will be participating in the National Simultaneous Storytime along with likely over 2 million other participants in more than 59,000 locations. This year’s text – The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young (author) and illustrated by Heath MacKenzie is a delightful rhyming tale of Spike who may not win the race she enters, but her mindset remains positive and her mission of making it home is completed, with support from family and allies. Our students will hear both the hard copy text and participate in an online reading with Grant Denyer on Wednesday May 24th at 10:30 Adelaide time. Do ask the children about Spike and the story after Wednesday.

Premier Reading Challenge

With the cooler weather settling in – what better time to curl up with a book – and perhaps one from the Premier’s Reading Challenge list, to include on your Challenge record for 2023. With the 20th Anniversary of the Challenge this year participants can enter the challenge in two ways. In the traditional way of 12 books at their level, and then by adding 8 extras of their choosing (20 for 20) participants will be awarded an extra anniversary certificate, along with the medal or certificate they are up to in the challenge.

Facilities Update

Work on the loft areas is continuing this week in the Reception area, followed by the Year 1 loft and finally the Admin loft. This should all be completed by the end of June.

Part of the work involves the replacement of some roof fascias, colorbond steel and window seals in those areas. Unfortunately the blue colour that most of the fascias are painted with is no longer available so we will be using Monument, which is already in use at school.

Paul and Clare have been very successful in persuading the department  to have all fascias and verandahs around the school replaced to match the new colour, rather than having a variety of colours around the school.

This is a great result as it will provide a uniformed look across the school. Painting work will commence Monday 22 June on the year 1 verandah area.  We will need to be flexible with bag storage and classroom access as this work also needs to be completed by the end of June.

School Sport Update

Southern Heights Sport SA Football.

Congratulations to Hope May ( girls),  Jack Argent and Cooper Slattery (boys) who represented the Southern Heights zone last week. All played well in a great week of footy while developing  their skills  and cementing some new friendships.

Mark Lemmey had a great time coaching the boys team and was supported on the day by Matt Slattery.

School Netball

School netball is back this term with Craigburn registering four teams – a Year two/three team, two Year three/four teams and a Year five/six team. The teams have been training hard once a week and now have played two matches against other local schools. Our students have represented Craigburn with pride, showing high levels of teamwork, persistence and resilience – all having fun.

Thank you to our Netball Coordinator, Liann Delgado, for all of her efforts in forming  and registering the teams. Also a massive thank you to the parents who have put their hands up to coach the teams – school netball wouldn’t have been possible without your support.
