Spring Tomato Plant Fundraiser: Order Your Seedlings Now
It is now time to plant tomatoes! Spring is the perfect time to start planting, and our school garden is excited to offer a variety of tomato seedlings that you can order now via Qkr!
Please place your orders by 9 am on Friday mornings, and the seedlings will be delivered to your child’s classroom that afternoon. It’s a great way to get into the gardening spirit, and your support helps raise funds for our school projects.
About Our Tomato Varieties
All the tomatoes available in our fundraiser are ‘indeterminate’ varieties, which means they grow on long, tall vines and will fruit continuously throughout the season. To keep them healthy and thriving, they’ll need a sturdy frame to climb on. Here are a few essential tips:
- Sunlight: Tomato plants need at least six hours of full sun each day.
- Soil Preparation: We prepare our garden plots by working in compost and organic fertiliser to nourish the plants.
- Support: As the plants grow, tie the stems loosely to a frame using natural twine, allowing room for the stems to thicken.
Order on Qkr! All plants are $4 each or 4 for $12
Simply place your orders on Qkr! by 9am each Friday, and plants will be delivered to your student’s classroom in the afternoon.
Here are the exciting varieties you can choose from:
Barnley Surecrop
A semi-determinate variety that grows up to 2 metres tall. It produces medium-sized, round, red fruit up to 6 cm across, with a hint of dark green near the stem. This variety is very productive with a classic tomato flavour.
This beautiful tomato has velvety skin and golf ball-sized fruit that blushes to a creamy yellow when ripe. It offers a rich, fruity, sweet taste with a slight tang. The skin texture helps deter pests, including fruit flies.
Extraterrestrial Tomato (Reisetomate)
This unique heirloom looks like a cluster of red tomatoes fused together. Known as the “Traveller’s Tomato” because it can be torn apart one piece at a time, it’s a fascinating variety with a much better flavour than supermarket hybrids. Though its harvest season is short, it yields 1.1 kg per plant, ready in 13 weeks from transplant.
Burnwood Prize
A vigorous grower that produces medium-sized, scarlet red tomatoes. These juicy, well-rounded fruits are perfect for salads, sandwiches, and sauces, whether raw or cooked.
Yellow Tommy Toe
This vibrant, bright yellow heirloom variety known for its exceptional, sweet flavour. It produces 3 cm cherry tomatoes in clusters of 7-9. Long-cropping and disease-resistant, this is a garden favourite.
We’re excited to help you grow delicious, homegrown tomatoes this season! Thank you for supporting our school garden program and happy gardening
