The Weekly Wrap – Term 4 Week 7 – 2024

Be Active Success

On Thursday, our Year 6 Be Active Leaders, along with Mrs. Pettman attended the Premier’s Be Active Challenge (PBAC) Reception at Netball SA . We are thrilled to share that Craigburn Primary was again recognised as one of the top 50 highest-achieving schools in the state for completing the challenge this year.

Lincoln and Charlee were presented with a certificate and $1000 by the Minister for Education, Blair Boyer. They also had the opportunity to meet former Craigburn student and PBAC Ambassador Ben Hinks, as well as 36ers basketball star Isaac Humphries. The Sports Leaders will now explore how to best utilise the $1000 to further encourage physical activity at Craigburn.

Well done to all students involved in promoting an active lifestyle at Craigburn.

A special mention too, to Craigburn parent Denes Nagy, who received an award for his winning Be Active poster design.

Over the next two weeks, our Year 6 students will be attending their orientation and transition visits to their new secondary schools. We wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this exciting first glimpse into high school life.

Gala Day – Monday 2 December

Gala Day is a cherished Craigburn tradition that has been celebrated for over 20 years. This much-loved event allows students in Years 3–6 to create and manage their own enterprising stalls, offering food, crafts, or activities in a lively, market-style setting.

Why is it special?
Gala Day provides students with the opportunity to develop important life skills such as creativity, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. They also learn about advertising, marketing, and managing money.

How does it work?
On the day, students from all year levels can visit the stalls to purchase items or participate in activities. Younger students can bring up to $5, while older students can bring up to $10 in coins to spend.

Proceeds
All money raised will go towards purchasing new board games for the library, which students can enjoy during lunchtimes.

Class Placement for 2025 and Orientation Visits – Wednesday 11 December

We continue to work on our class placement process for 2025. This is a detailed and thoughtful process where our teachers and leadership team collaborate to create optimal learning environments for all students.

Class Groupings
Class groupings are based on total student enrolment across year levels, in accordance with Department for Education policies.

Straight and Composite Classes
Due to varied numbers of students in each year level in 2025, composite (multi-age) classes will be formed, alongside straight year-level classes. These classes provide flexibility, allowing us to cater to a range of abilities and learning needs. Teachers collaborate to design programs that support all students, regardless of class structure.

Staffing Arrangements
There will be changes to our teaching team in 2025, with new teachers joining, some returning from leave, and variations in teaching arrangements, including tandem teaching (two teachers sharing class responsibilities).

Class Placement Process
When placing students, we consider academic, social, emotional, and behavioural needs, gender balance, special needs, and positive learning partners. We aim to place students with at least one positive learning partner whom each student identified in a recent survey.

Parent / Carer Input
Thank you to the parents and carers who provided their insights on their child’s needs through the ‘Class Placement – Parent / Carer Input Form.’

Timeline
Class placements will be finalised by the end of Week 8, with details shared in Week 9. On Wednesday, 11 December, students will meet their new class and teacher. Placement letters will be sent home with end of year reports on the day.

Thank you for your ongoing support and trust as we work together to ensure the best learning environments for all students.

Last Day of the School Year – Friday 13 December – Early Dismissal – 2.10pm

As per the department’s policy regarding early dismissals, schools are only able to dismiss students up to one hour prior to normal dismissal. This means that on our last school day of the year, Friday 13 December, students will be dismissed at 2.10pm.

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal and SRC Casual Clothes Day

To support the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal, we will be having our final Casual Clothes Day on Friday 13th of December. Instead of the regular gold coin donation, we are asking our school community for assistance through the collection of non-perishable food items. Further details here.

Christmas Raffle – Donations Please

Thank you to the families who in previous years have donated items for our Celebration Night Christmas Raffle.

Again, we ask families to contribute if possible to our final school fundraiser for the year.

Please see the Christmas Raffle post for more information.

End of Year Reports

At this time of the term, teachers are finalising end of year student reports. As part of the reporting process, teachers have been working with year level team colleagues to moderate and discuss student assessments to ensure consistency of teacher judgement when reporting A-E grades for subject areas within the Australian  Curriculum. Reports will be sent home with students on Wednesday 11th December. For families who have a child absent from school in the last week of term ( and who have an approved exemption) will have the report emailed.

Material and Services Charge for 2025

Thank you to the families who responded to our Materials and Services charges poll for 2025. Of the 122 responses received, 93% of parents voted in favour of approving the Governing Council’s proposal that the Materials & Service charge is set at $460 for the 2025 school year, remaining unchanged from this year. This means all parents and caregivers (excluding approved School Card holders) are liable for this charge.

Parents and caregivers will receive information about this when invoices are sent home at the start of the new school year.  Please note the Government rebate will again be offered to families, which has been increased to $200.

Student Free Days 2025

Save the dates

  • Monday 17 February – Term 1 Week 4
  • Monday 21 August – Term 3 – Week 1

Each year, the Department for Education provides an allocation of four student-free days for schools to use for staff professional development, curriculum planning, and administrative tasks. At Craigburn, these days are strategically scheduled throughout the year based on school and department priorities.

A continuing priority for us leading into 2025 is the ongoing implementation of the DIBELs reading project led by Dr Sarah McDonagh from New South Wales.

Next year, Dr McDonagh will continue working with schools in our local partnership on the following dates – Monday 17 February and Monday 21 August. These 2 days have been endorsed by our Governing Council for 2025.

A further 2 student free days will be scheduled and communicated to families early in the new school year.

A school closure day (a day of local significance) will also be scheduled, which typically aligns with the week of the Royal Adelaide Show.
