There Was an Old Woman… Who Swallowed a Fliege!

November 5, 2015 by Carly Smith

Here is a fantastic example of the project our 6/7 students have been working on this term.

Since Week 1 the students have chosen groups, selected a play, practised their lines, used strategies to improve their pronunciation and in most cases, filmed their presentations.

This process has not been without its challenges and students have had to work through different situations, negotiate with peers and support each other.

The students have put in a very high level of effort into the assignment and I am very proud of their products!

Here is the German play created by Elise, Arabella, Mia and Tayla – enjoy!

A German Breakfast

November 2, 2015 by Carly Smith

This week the Year 3/4/5 students will be looking at what German people may eat for breakfast and comparing it with their own breakfast meals.

To help with the comparing and contrasting, students will be working with a Venn diagram to identify what may be the same and different between the two typical meals.

Prior to this, students will be watching two videos. One video is an interesting look at breakfasts from around the world and the other, an introduction to German breakfast by two American travellers.

Here are the videos – what do you think about them?

Comic Creations

October 29, 2015 by Carly Smith

This week our Year 3-5 students have been learning how to talk about foods they like and dislike. They have learnt sentences such as:

  • Das ist lecker! / Das ist nicht lecker
  • Das schmeckt gut! / Das schmeckt nicht gut
  • Brot ist lecker! / Brot ist nicht lecker

Students have also been encouraged to mix and match phrases and add in other German words they know, like ‘ja’ and ‘nein.’

To help learn the new phrases, students are creating comic-like dialogues! They have been given blank faces and speech bubbles and need to give the characters a personality and have them tell the other person their food likes or dislikes.

I think we’ll have some fantastic finished products!

Deutsches Essen im Supermarkt

October 27, 2015 by Carly Smith

This week the Year 3/4/5 students have a challenge: to find German food and drink products in their local supermarket!

Going home this week is an activity that children can undertake over the coming weeks. If/when they go shopping with friends or family members, they have been encouraged to see if they can find German products on the shelves. We have talked about many supermarkets now having small speciality sections that have products from other countries.

Students have also been encouraged to look in the cupboards, or other cupboards (with permission, of course!) to see what they can find.

It would be fantastic if you could comment on this post as you find products to share them with us all!

I will add findings as they come in!

Snap Chat – Was ist deine Lieblingsessen?

October 19, 2015 by Carly Smith

This week our Year 3/4/5 students will participate in their first ‘Snap Chat.’

A ‘Snap Chat’ is designed to be a short activity focussing on surveying other students about a particular topic. The topic this week will be, ‘What is your favourite fruit/vegetable/meat/sweets,’ etc.

The main aim of Snap Chat is to get the students speaking in German – and to have fun!

German Plays – The Planning

October 15, 2015 by Carly Smith

This term the Year 6/7 classes (and one 5/6) will be working in small groups to produce a play entirely in German. Oral language is to be central to their presentation.

Each group will:

  • choose a small group to work in (3-4 people)
  • select an appropriate German play from either the Beginner play book or the Intermediate play book
  • put together a proposal of how they will be presenting their play (movie, podcast, play, etc)
  • support each other in rehearsing the language
  • create a presentation that will then be shared with peers and on the blog

The first sessions this week went very well and the students were completely engaged in the task for their entire lesson. The ideas about their presentations are exciting and we are all looking forward to sharing the finished products.

Some of the projects our students are working on are iMovies, puppet plays, finger puppet plays and podcasts.

Stay tuned for the next stage of the projects!
