It’s a Schultüte!

May 10, 2016 by Carly Smith

In Germany, children often receive a huge cone filled with gifts on their first day of school! These are called, ‘Schultütes’ or school cones.

This week our Reception children are decorating their own mini Schultüte (an origami cone made by Frau Smith) and then receiving some German gifts to take home and enjoy!

Each student will take home a ruler with ‘Ich Liebe Deutsch’ written on it (I love German), a bookmark with the same writing, an eraser with ‘Guten Tag’ written on it (hello), 2 German stickers and a pencil with ‘Gut Gemacht’ on it (well done).

Here are some pictures of our Reception children decorating their Schultütes and playing a fun new fly swat game to finish the lesson off!

Willkommen!

May 6, 2016 by Carly Smith

Welcome to Term 2 and welcome to the Year Reception – Year 2 students!

We have spent the first week catching up on holiday news and creating some very heartfelt Muttertag cards – we hope the Craigburn mums love them on Sonntag.

I have been very busy today as well, preparing something special for the receptions next week. Can you guess what I’m creating from the pictures? Stay tuned!

Hint… it has something to do with a German tradition that treats children on their first day of school!

Zahlen 11 bis 20

April 1, 2016 by Carly Smith

The Year 3 students have been concentrating hard on learning their numbers from 11 to 20 in German. We have been playing games, listening to songs and participating in other activities to help us learn and remember them.

More importantly, we’ve been looking at the patterns you find in counting. Each student was asked to explain, using pictures, sentences or any other way they could think of, the patterns they see when counting to 20. Most found this quite a difficult task! They had learnt and could recite the numbers but found it much trickier to explain what was going on.

Here is an explanation by a Year 3 student, Lauren. She explained the number patterns very well!

Frau Bowden’s Klasse

March 31, 2016 by Carly Smith

Inspired by the podcasts of the Year 6/7s, our 4/5 students decided they would like to make one as well!

The Year 4/5s have been learning about how to talk about sports and hobbies they like and dislike and used this language, along with already familiar language, to write a script in small groups. They needed to focus on using plenty of language surrounding their likes/dislikes, adding in other questions and answers to make their conversation ‘flow’ and strive to speak fluently.

After rehearsing their scripts, the students used iMovie to record their dialogue, which we can now share on our blog!

Deutsche Reise

March 29, 2016 by Carly Smith

Over the past few weeks the Year 6/7 students have been learning vocabulary related to train travel in Germany, watched videos showing how Deutsche Bahn (DB) works in Germany and are now planning a trip around Germany in small groups. Once the route has been determined students will use the Deutsche Bahn website to ‘book’ tickets between locations.

To organise this final task students are first making notes on A3 planning sheets before using iPads to research locations. It’s great to see the creativity coming from this task!

Herr Spurr’s Klasse

March 3, 2016 by Carly Smith

So far this term our Year 6/7 students have been participating in activities that has equipped them with the skills needed to produce a German podcast.

They have:

  • conducted an interview to find out information about a classmate
  • matched questions in German with appropriate answers
  • used these Q/As, as well as prior knowledge, to write a script with a classmate
  • used an iPad to record their script

During this unit students have developed skills in listening for keywords in speech, reading German sentences and finding written keywords, challenged themselves by creating a script that came across as flowing rather than static sounding and worked very hard on perfecting pronunciation.

Here are the podcasts produced by Herr Spurr’s Year 6/7 class:

Kaine & Mitchell

Jemma & Katie

Maxi & Damien

Mia & Zoe

Olivia & Chloe

Sam & Kane

Tanisha & Tahlia

Will & Lachlan

Aimee & Holly

Amy & Leah

Carrie & Mia

Hannah & Lucy

Harry & Mitchell
