Deutsches Essen im Supermarkt

This week the Year 3/4/5 students have a challenge: to find German food and drink products in their local supermarket!

Going home this week is an activity that children can undertake over the coming weeks. If/when they go shopping with friends or family members, they have been encouraged to see if they can find German products on the shelves. We have talked about many supermarkets now having small speciality sections that have products from other countries.

Students have also been encouraged to look in the cupboards, or other cupboards (with permission, of course!) to see what they can find.

It would be fantastic if you could comment on this post as you find products to share them with us all!

I will add findings as they come in!

German Plays – The Planning

This term the Year 6/7 classes (and one 5/6) will be working in small groups to produce a play entirely in German. Oral language is to be central to their presentation.

Each group will:

  • choose a small group to work in (3-4 people)
  • select an appropriate German play from either the Beginner play book or the Intermediate play book
  • put together a proposal of how they will be presenting their play (movie, podcast, play, etc)
  • support each other in rehearsing the language
  • create a presentation that will then be shared with peers and on the blog

The first sessions this week went very well and the students were completely engaged in the task for their entire lesson. The ideas about their presentations are exciting and we are all looking forward to sharing the finished products.

Some of the projects our students are working on are iMovies, puppet plays, finger puppet plays and podcasts.

Stay tuned for the next stage of the projects!

Essen und Trinken – Can you match them?

Today our Year 3-5 students were given a challenge. They worked in small groups to try and match 12 pictures of food and drinks with the matching word. It was a challenge as this was before any learning about the subject!

A lot of students found that there are strong links between some German and English words (like Salat/salad, Kaffee/coffee) and that we actually use some German words in our everyday language (Schnitzel).

We then looked at the terms for meal times (Fruhstuck, Mittagessen, Abendessen und Nachtisch) and started sorting pictures of food into the ‘best fit’ mealtime.

Wer ist das?

Our Year 3-5 students have been very busy creating creatures using coloured paper, crepe paper and cellophane paper. Students needed to sketch a portrait of a creature of their choice (person, animal, monster, anything!) and write 5 sentences describing it. The sentences were based on the jumble task but needed to be changed to reflect their own creature. Here are some photos of the process and final presentations – the students very much enjoyed the creativity of this task!

Describing ourselves and others

In German we are learning how to describe ourselves and others. We have played, ‘Wer ist das’ in small groups, completed online activities and have practised writing lots of our own sentences. It can be tricky because when we talk about ourselves, we use ‘ich’ but when we talk about others we have to change it to ‘er’ or ‘sie.’ With lots of practice we are getting very good at changing between the three!

We have decorated faces and described them and unjumbled sentences. To show we understood what we had unjumbled, we had to draw a picture of what the sentences described. We were so proud that we were able to read German!

Wer ist das?

20150512_121126 20150512_121131 This term the Year 3-5 students have been learning how to describe themselves and others. One fun game we played to help us with our learning was, ‘Wer ist das?’ – the German version of ‘Guess Who!’ All classes were SO enthusiastic while playing this game and the German language coming from every corner of the classroom made it a very fun classroom to be in!
