Musica Viva Performance

Last Friday  we had a very special musical performance by Tigramuna  co-ordinated by Musica Viva. Tigramuna is a group of musicians who play South American urban music. We learnt about the music of Latin America and the rhythms they use in their music. The members of the group were; Nick, Claudio, Carlos, Eddie and Marco.

Many students were chosen from the audience to participate in the performance by playing different musical instruments on stage and we all clapped and danced to the rhythms of the songs.

Today’s Future Sound

Today we were very lucky to have 2 special visitors in our classroom.

They were Elliot and Alex from Today’s Future Sound which is a nonprofit teaching music production, media literacy, using as mental health and edu intervention for underserved youth in Bay Area/LA school+community settings. They are from San Francisco in the USA.

Elliot and Alex are visiting Australia at the moment and have worked in many of our capital cities already. They’re visiting Adelaide for a couple of days – working in different schools and with teachers.

We had lots of fun learning lots of exciting new music making skills – we looked at different DJ’s who use different techniques to mix and create their music, YouTube clips showing their music in a variety of dance clips filmed all around the world AND the best part was we created some music with them. The classes were divided into 3 different groups to ‘play’ different parts of the song and then we used their digital equipment to record our own song – an original!

Jaime and Holly’s Recorder Song

We did a duet. The songs were called Green Jelly and Please  Pudding Hot. We did another song called Movie Buster. We did it in front of the class together. It was scary. We did it with music. First we practised then we came to the classroom and brang the stand and the cd player and our recorders and played  our songs. It was fun.

South Australian Police Band

This afternoon we watched the SA Police Band perform for our whole school. Nine police officers played different musical instruments and talked to us about staying safe in our community.

The important safety message had 3 parts:

  1. Police are our friends
  2. Police keep us safe and
  3. In an emergency dial 000.

The talented band members were:

  • James playing the oboe
  • Paul playing the clarinet
  • Tom playing the saxaphone
  • Paul playing trumpet
  • Steve playing drums
  • Dave playing the tuba
  • Nigel on the French horn and
  • Neil on the trombone.

Their instruments were either percussion (drums), woodwind or brass. They played lots of different songs we knew, especially songs for TV shows or children’s movies.

Music with Mrs Rayner

This is a song we’ve learned in our Music lesson with Mrs Rayner. Our class has learned an African  welcoming song with Mrs Rayner. Our class was split into groups and each group played different instruments. We played xylophones (bass & alto), guiros, shakers and bass metallophones.

Jaime and Holly’s Recorder Song

Jaime and Holly have been learning how to play the recorder. Their teacher is Sarah and each week they have lessons at school with Sarah. They also need to do lots of practise at home.

Today Sarah came and helped the girls play a couple of songs for our class. We thought they were very brave to perform in front of us, especially given that they have only been learning the recorder for about 8 weeks.

Here’s the songs they played.

What did you think of Jaime and Holly’s recorder items?

Talented Musicians!!

Yesterday the class invited me into watch their music lesson with Mrs Rayner.

They were just soooo talented!!!! What clever musicians!!

Mrs Rayner is an amazing teacher to have the whole class playing together so musically.

The class were improvising in a song called Reggae Hey! They played accompaniments to the Reggae beat.

It was wonderful to see the children playing the different musical instruments – like marimbas, glockenspiels, percussion egg (shakers) and xylophones.

Next time I’m going to record them playing so you can hear how talented they are!

Here’s some photos from the song.

Tell us what you thought of your lesson – which instrument were you playing?

Craigburn’s Got Talent

Today we held the finals of our Craigburn’s Got Talent performances and WOW the children at Craigburn really DO have a lot of talent!!

CONGRATULATIONS to Ethan for winning the Craigy for 2012.

Ethan performed a song on the saxaphone.

He is a Year 3 in the classroom nextdoor to us.

Here’s a photo of Ethan as he receives the Craigy trophy.

Two weeks ago Mrs Rayner started to hold the try outs for each class. We had lots of students prepare and organise their performances for our try outs on Tuesday. After a long week of performances from all Reception to Year 7 students the finalists were announced.

There was a great variety of acts that made the finals – solo singers, group songs and dances, skipping, dances, hip hop dance, musical instruments being played and so many more.

Our class had four different groups make the final.

Lachlan played his drums and sang Come Together by the Beatles.

Lucy and Sarah sang and danced to a song.

Emma, Jenny and Hannah sang and danced to a One Direction song.

Samuel sang a song.

We’d like to say congratulations to all of the students who were brave enough to organise and prepare an item for Craigburn’s Got Talent. It takes a lot of courage and confidence to perform in front of an audience of around 600 people.

The judges found it really difficult to make a final decision as there can only be one winner of the Craigy trophy.  There were lots of ties for the second and third positions – well done to everyone!

Here are all of the members from our class that tried out for Craigburn’s Got Talent!

Here are the class members that made the finals today.
