Get Ready To Celebrate Book Week

We are excited to celebrate Book Week next week from Monday 18 to Friday 22 August. It promises to be a week filled with storytelling, creativity, and inspiration. The week will culminate in two special visits from talented creators whose work our students already know and love.

The Great Book Swap

A reminder to get ready for a fabulous opportunity to participate in our Great Book Swap and  swap books, share the joy of reading, and support First Nations communities across Australia! Further details here.

Dress Up Day and Parade – Friday, 22nd August

Get ready to spark imaginations and explore new worlds—Our annual Book Week Dress Up Day and Parade is on Friday 22nd August, with students invited to come dressed as characters inspired by this year’s theme, Book an Adventure!

  • Parade Location & Time – Join us at 9:15 am on the bottom court next to the amphitheatre (weather permitting) as students embark on a creative expedition right here at school
  • Family Welcome & Warm Drinks – Families are warmly invited to attend and soak in the atmosphere. The Daily Grind will be onsite, offering delicious coffee and hot chocolate to enjoy before the parade begins.
  • Costume Creativity Encouraged – Whether your child dreams of distant lands, magical quests, or daring escapades, we encourage imaginative costumes using items you already have at home. Let’s embrace the spirit of “booking an adventure” together.
  • Second Hand Costume Shop Reminder – Got pre-loved costumes to share? Send them in and place them in the labelled tubs open in the Library. At the Shop, you’ll find a fun selection of book character clothes and accessories—all under $2. Proceeds will support the Environment Team’s school garden projects.

Special Author & Illustrator Visits for Book Week

As part of our Book Week celebrations, we are thrilled to host two inspiring guest visits:

  • Wednesday 20 August – Jared Thomas (Years 3–6) – Jared Thomas, proud Nukunu man and award-winning author of Uncle Xbox and the Game Day! basketball series with Patty Mills, will share stories of culture, sport, family, and belonging. Students will hear firsthand how his experiences and heritage shape his writing.
  • Friday 22 August – Danny Snell (Reception–Year 2) – Adelaide-based illustrator Danny Snell, creator of The Truck Cat—this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime title—will take students behind the scenes of picture book illustration, showing how characters and stories come to life through art.

These sessions promise to inspire, entertain, and spark creativity in our young readers and writers.

We look forward to sharing this wonderful experience with everyone!

Mean on Purpose? No Way! Week – 11–15 August

This week we are taking part in the National Week of Action Against Bullying and Violence, which we call Mean on Purpose? No Way! Week at Craigburn.

Students will be involved in activities promoting kindness, respect, and positive relationships, including:

  • Kindness Wall – Classes will add messages, drawings, and compliments to create a whole-school kindness display.
  • Connection Chain – At lunchtime in the library, students can write or colour a compliment to add to a growing chain of kindness.

We look forward to celebrating the ways our students support and care for each other.

Oodie Hot Chocolate Day Thanks

A big thank you to our wonderful Friends of Craigburn Team for organising, promoting and serving hot chocolate drinks on the day. Lots of happy smiling customers.

NAPLAN 2025 – Years 3 and 5 Student Results

NAPLAN student reports for Years 3 and 5 will be sent home early next week, along with an information sheet to help families understand the results.

NAPLAN provides a snapshot of your child’s literacy and numeracy skills at the time of testing and complements ongoing classroom assessments. Results are reported in four proficiency levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs additional support.

Teachers use this information, along with other assessments, to guide teaching and provide targeted support where needed. We encourage families to celebrate achievements and discuss any areas for growth.

If you have any questions after reviewing your child’s results, please contact their class teacher.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

This term, all Year 1 students will take part in the Phonics Screening Check. This short assessment helps teachers understand how students blend sounds to read words, and identifies those who may need extra support with reading.

Your child will sit one-on-one with their teacher and read 40 words—half real and half “nonsense” words—to check their ability to sound out unfamiliar words. It usually takes just a few minutes and is designed to be low-stress.

Results help teachers plan the best next steps for each student’s reading progress.

If you have any questions, please speak with your child’s teacher.

Progressive Achievement Tests

Later this term, students in  years 2-6 will be participating in the annual Progressive Achievement Tests – PAT-Reading and PAT-Maths.

The Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) are online reading comprehension and maths assessments aligned to the Australian Curriculum. The tests are administered each year and provide teachers with information about the learning strengths and needs of their students.

Weekend Netball Results

Year 2s- Coach Tammy

A tough 10-to-1 defeat for our Year 2 girls against Mitcham Blue this week. Very proud to see their enthusiasm and resilience for the game shine as they gave their all until the final whistle.

Well done girls. Very proud of their hard work.

Year 2/3s – Coach Sara

Tough loss in the final moments today, such a close game right to the end! Amazing shooting from the whole team, with a huge goal from Alice K. Our defence was absolutely incredible! so proud of the effort from everyone out there!

Year 3/4s – Coach Kimmy

A nail-biting 4 quarters for our team this week. We held a strong lead for most of the game, but ended up with a 2 point loss. The girls worked so hard through the whole game, showing us why trainings and netball drills are so important. Couldn’t be prouder.

Year 5s – Coach Mathilda

Weeks of hard work finally paid off for Craigburn Gold, with a solid win over Colonel Light Gardens on Saturday. The team really pulled together, confidently driving the ball into our goal third to come out on top. Everyone showed just how far they’ve come since the start of the season, and we look forward to finishing the last few games strong.

Year 5/6s – Coach Merissa

Craigburn Navy put in a determined performance against Aberfoyle Campus this week, going down 2–8. Despite the tough opposition and solid support from the crowd cheering them on, the team never stopped giving their all, showing grit and teamwork right to the final whistle. Well done girls !

Year 6s -Coach  Annika

Due to illness from our opposition, the game was cancelled, so we had a weekend off. Hoping the other team makes a speedy recovery.

Have a great week – Kim Altschwager, Netball Coordinator
