Craigburn Year 6 Campers

Best wishes to our Year 6 students as they head off to Camp El Shaddai at Wellington this week. We’re sure they’ll enjoy an exciting few days of adventure, teamwork, and fun. A sincere thank you to our dedicated teachers for their hard work and support in organising and running these camps and parents who have volunteered their time to help meet supervision ratios.

Cyber Safety Parent Session – Key Takeaways

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Miranda Shaw, Craigburn parent and Executive Specialist in Cyber Assurance & Engagement at ASIC, who led a highly informative session on keeping children safe online.

Miranda shared the latest insights into the fast-changing world of cyber safety and offered clear, practical strategies for families. She reminded us that while technology continues to evolve rapidly, the most effective protection starts at home—with awareness, communication, and a few simple habits.

Key takeaways for families:

  • Enable multi-factor authentication, keep devices updated, and use strong passwords or a password manager.
  • Encourage open conversations about online behaviour in a “no fear, no blame” environment.
  • Keep younger children’s internet use in shared spaces and set clear boundaries on device use.
  • Balance screen time with offline activities, and stay informed through trusted sites like the eSafety Commissioner and Cyber.gov.au

Miranda also spoke about the importance of encouraging girls’ interest in STEM and cyber careers, helping to break stereotypes and open future opportunities.

A big thank you to Miranda for sharing her expertise and to our parent community for attending and engaging in such an important discussion.

World Teachers’ Day Thanks

Thank you to our students and families who acknowledged our teachers last Friday as part of celebrating World Teachers’ Day. Your kind messages and thoughtful tokens of appreciation were warmly received. If you would like to share your appreciation further, you can also do so through the Department for Education’s ThankED initiative — a wonderful way to recognise staff across public education who make a difference every day.

Class Planning and Placement Information for 2026

A reminder to check in with our recent post, Class Planning and Placement Information for 2026, which outlines how this process works. This post provides full details about the considerations that guide class groupings and placements for the coming year.

2026 Materials and Services Charges Poll

This week, families will receive a Materials and Services Charges Polling Letter. As outlined in the letter, the Craigburn Primary School Governing Council has approved the proposed Materials and Services Charge for 2026 at $480.

The Materials and Services (M&S) Charge helps cover the cost of essential items and services used by students in their learning. For 2026, the Governing Council has recommended the charge be set at $480, which directly supports your child’s education by providing:

  • Classroom and curriculum resources such as stationery, printed and digital materials, and access to books
  • Library and information technology resources
  • Contributions toward whole-school programs and incursions, such as Footsteps, Book Week, Jam Band and PE Week, which enrich our students’ learning experiences — noting that these costs have increased in recent years.

We believe this represents excellent value — at just over $12 per student per school week — helping us maintain the high-quality learning opportunities that our community values.

As announced in the 2025–26 State Budget, the Materials and Services Charge rebate for the 2026 school year will remain at $200 per student.

Importantly, when families contribute by paying the full amount, it not only benefits their own child but also supports the school’s capacity to provide equitable access for all students, including those eligible for School Card assistance. Your contribution helps us keep programs running at the level our students deserve.

Because the proposed charge of $480 is higher than the legislated prescribed amount of $306 for a primary student (as referenced in the Education and Children’s Services Act), the Governing Council is required to undertake a poll to gain majority support from the school community for this charge to become compulsory and recoverable in full.

The Governing Council therefore seeks your support for the proposed 2026 Materials and Services Charge of $480 to be made compulsory.

Each family is entitled to one vote per student per poll, with the majority determined by the number of respondents. If the majority supports the proposal, all parents and carers (excluding approved School Card holders) will be liable for this charge.

If you have any questions, please contact Clare Aikens (Business Manager), Paul Luke (Principal), or myself via the front office.

Bushfire Response Plan

Please take time to read through our Bushfire Response Plan for 2025/26, which forms part of our local emergency management procedures.

The bushfire response plan ensures what action we need to take on days of increased fire danger or in the event of a potential or actual bushfire threat. The bushfire response plan also assists the Department’s Security and Emergency Management (SEM) unit in providing emergency services key information regarding the location of students and staff during a bushfire emergency.Read more here.
