Our National Simultaneous Storytime is fast approaching on Wednesday 21st May.
This year’s book is ‘The Truck Cat’ written by Deborah Frenkel and illustrated by Danny Snell (Adelaide based illustrator). This beautiful picture book explores themes of belonging, connection and finding a place to call ‘home’.
The story character, Yacoub, finds connection through the memories of delicious food from his childhood, cooking and eating with his Nena (Grandmother). For me, I find connection to my childhood through memories of my Grandma Pat’s sensational stewed apricot sponge pudding served with a dollop of whipped cream and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Food invites you in, reminisces about past times and embodies your senses in a nostalgic adventure. Food has an amazing ability to connect us, it follows migration, cultures and families.

Inspired by Yacoub and his truck cat Tinker, we invite you to share a favourite recipe from your home. Here’s what to do:
- Take a screenshot or photo and email it through to dl.1226.library@schools.sa.edu.au or alternatively send a photocopy into school.
- Credit the source of your recipe (cookbook/chef)
- Include your child’s name and class number.
- You may wish to attach a little note about why the recipe is special.
We will collate the recipes into a ‘book’ that can be borrowed by students from the library or copies can be purchased for a small donation with proceeds going to The Australian Refugee Association Australian Refugee Association Website.
Through sharing our favourite recipes we hope to support our communities’ connection.
We look forward to receiving your recipes.
