We hope everyone had a restful weekend after an incredible Book Week!
Celebrating Book Week at Craigburn
What a wonderful week of storytelling, creativity, and imagination we’ve shared together at Craigburn Primary School as part of Book Week 2025! Throughout the week students, staff, and families embraced the theme ‘Book an Adventure’ with enthusiasm.
Highlights of the Week
The Great Book Swap
Thank you to everyone who generously donated books and contributed gold coins. Students loved choosing a ‘new to them’ book while supporting the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Together, we shared the joy of reading and helped provide books for First Nations communities across Australia. More details here.
Dress Up Day & Parade
Our annual dress up day was a colourful celebration, with students and staff bringing favourite characters to life. Thank you to all families who joined us on the day – we hope you enjoyed the parade. A special shout out to our student hosts, Piper and Caitlin, who did a great job highlighting each class and their adventure-themed costumes. Special thanks to the Daily Grind for keeping everyone warm with coffee and hot chocolate.
Author & Illustrator Visits
Students were inspired by visits from Jared Thomas, proud Nukunu man and award-winning author, and Danny Snell, Adelaide-based illustrator of The Truck Cat. Their workshops gave students a unique window into the creative world of storytelling, culture, and art. Read further on for a summary of their visits.
Thank You
A huge thank you to our Library staff (Krysten and Emily) and Canteen team (Sue and Annika) for bringing Book Week to life with engaging activities in the library and canteen. Thank you too, to students, staff and families for making the week a special one.
Author Visit with Jared Thomas – by Year 5 student, Addison P
On Wednesday the 20th of August, author Jared Thomas spoke to us about his life and being a writer. He started out by writing plays. His first play was presented in Africa. He has written multiple classics including Uncle Xbox and Game Day with Patty Mills. Jared has a strong love for his culture and loves Dreamtime stories. He is a proud Nukuna person and he’s also part Nadjuri, Swiss, Irish, Guwa (or Koa) and Scottish.
Surprisingly, Jared Thomas struggled in school and only read BMX magazines and national geographic as a child. He is strongly against racism, bullying and sexism. He played a lot of sports in his childhood such as AFL, cricket and basketball. He loved riding his BMX bike at his local BMX track.
He strongly encourages kids to find something they love and persist in it. Jared is about to add another 5 books to his Uncle Xbox series.
Illustrator Visit with Danny Snell
Book Week at Craigburn Primary was made extra special this year with a visit from award-winning South Australian illustrator and author, Danny Snell. Known for illustrating more than 30 children’s books, including The Truck Cat (this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime book). We even got to see the gold medal Danny won for The Truck Cat as Picture Book of the Year 2025! 🏅
Danny ran hands-on workshops with our R–2 students. They loved learning to draw ducks and butterflies 🦆🦋, exploring his creative process, and hearing him read One Little Duck.
Thank you, Danny, for inspiring our students and making Book Week extra special!

Weekend Netball Results
Year 2 coach – Tammy
Despite a loss to mitcham gold the girls continued to show a positive and fun attitude. Giving it their best and I was particularly proud of the sportsmanship they showed when filling in for the other team as they were 2 players short. Well done girls 😊
Year 2/3 coach – Sara
Our Year 2/3 team showed incredible determination this week. Although we fell behind early, the players fought hard to come back for an exciting draw. The effort at training really paid off. Passing was sharp and accurate, and the goal work was amazing to watch. A fantastic team performance that showed both resilience and skill!
Year 3/4 coach – Kimmy
Our Year 3/4 team played against Eden Hills this week and showed a huge improvement in their game. Although we went down by just 2 goals, the girls demonstrated incredible growth since our last match against this team. We’re both excited and a little sad as we head into our final game next week. Well done team! Your effort and teamwork have been outstanding!
Year 5 coach – Mathilda
The Year 5s hit the court ready for action in Saturday’s sunshine, and what a game it was, nail-biting right until the end!
Everyone rose to the challenge with moments of magic all over the court. Clever passes, great team work, and tight defence with plenty for us to celebrate. One more game to go, and we’re ready to finish the season with a bang!
Year 5/6 coach – Merissa
The Yr 5/6 Craigburn Navy netball team put in an impressive performance over the weekend, narrowly going down 9–12 in a hard-fought contest against Edwardstown. The girls led strongly for the first three quarters, matching it with a side that is known for winning by large margins. Over the past few weeks, the team has shown terrific improvement, moving the ball with confidence and putting their training drills into action. Their growth, along with the fun they’re having, is shining through in the way they play each week.
Year 6 coach – Annika
The Year 6 Netball girls had a great game against Eden Hills. Unfortunately, it didn’t go out way, with an annihilating 32 – 6 loss. It didn’t dampen their spirits, and despite the score, the girls still worked hard as a team and played well, working on their communication and teamwork. Well done girls!
