 📚 End-of-Year Library Book Return Reminder

As we head toward the summer holidays, it’s time to return all school library books and take-home readers. Please take a moment to search the usual hiding spots: the back of the car, bookshelves & toy boxes, school bags, under the bed and don’t forget your child’s tray at school.

Sometimes books love to hide, and other times they slip through our returns system and end up back on our shelves without being scanned. If you still can’t find a book, no worries at all—you’re welcome to pop into the library and check our shelves.

If the book seems to have disappeared entirely, simply send us a quick note or email dl.1226.library@schools.sa.edu.au and we can remove it from your child’s borrowing record. If it ever turns up in the future, please return it—we get excited when a lost book is returned!

If your family is leaving our school at the end of this year, we would especially appreciate your help returning any outstanding items. Each year many books go missing—often brand new titles with enthusiastic readers eagerly waiting for them. Your support helps keep our collection strong for all students.

Explore Your Local Library This Summer

Although our school library is now closed for borrowing, it’s the perfect time to visit your local council library. We’re lucky to have several fantastic libraries nearby, including The Hub, Woodcroft, Blackwood and Mitcham.

Joining your local library is free and comes with so many benefits:

☀️ Summer Holiday Reading – A Boost for Young Minds!

Summer is the perfect time for children to dive into books—purely for joy, curiosity and imagination and enjoy reading for relaxation, not pressure. Across Australia, educators and literacy advocates highlight the importance of keeping young readers engaged over the break. Even a little reading each week can make a big difference. Allowing children time to browse and choose what they want to read without judgement is really important.

Picture books, audiobooks, comics, graphic novels, facts, fiction, StoryBox videos—it all counts!

🌞 Why Summer Reading Matters….

Children can experience a “summer slide”—a decline in reading and literacy skills—when they step away from reading and story sharing for several weeks. According to research reading for enjoyment is the single most important predictor of a child’s future academic success. Regular reading supports:

📚 The Big Summer Read: The Big Summer Read Website

Running 1 December – 31 January, the Big Summer Read invites children aged 0–18 to stay connected with their local library and enjoy stories by logging any books they:

  • ✔️ read

  • ✔️ listen to

  • ✔️ watch in audio or StoryBox format

Participants can earn digital badges, unlock achievements, and enter both local and national prize draws. Parents and caregivers are also encouraged to log the books they read aloud to their children.
