Maths – HTU activity

We have been looking at number and place value during our maths lessons this term. We have done many activities around this and we have enjoyed many games. Here we are using a dice, blocks and a HTU board to play a game. We needed to roll the dice and add on the amount of blocks that we rolled. We then had to see if we needed to put a group of ten units together to make one group of ten and put the blocks in the correct columns We then wrote the number down on the board.

We also used the boards to play a big number game. Using a deck of cards (only ace to 9) we took turns in our small groups to draw a card. We then had to decide where we would place that numeral on our HTU board with the aim of creating the highest number. If an ace was drawn, we would place that in the Units column as its a very small digit. If a 9 was drawn, that would be the highest digit to be drawn, so we would place that in the hundreds column. It was up to luck which cards were drawn and if we played our cards right to create the highest number. We then wrote our completed number down and compared with the rest of the group to see who got the highest number. It was fun!
