Back In The Groove!
Hi All….Back in the groove – but don’t let the groove become a rut!
Hope the term has started off well. We are straight into it!
Homework this week is on fractions. We are doing fractions in our Maths Intervention classes (where students are differentiated across the unit, based on a pre-test and ongoing learning). We have been doing fractions since last term, but we made the decision to stick with them for the first half of this term, as they are such a fundamental skill. The homework is based on open ended questions. It is up to each student to determine answers which match their ability. The main problem I am having with homework, is students leaving it until Wednesday or Thursday night. Every Monday when I hand out homework, I remind the students to start Monday night, even if that just means reading through the questions to gauge whether you are going to need help or not.
The following students have Current Events this fortnight, so they need to get cracking ad plan out the next fortnight. The rubric for current events should be in your child’s Homework Book, but there are four marking components:
- Maps completed thoroughly
- Presentation-including spelling and grammar,
- Article Summary-in own words
- Personal Response. The personal responses have been a bit brief. They should indicate an awareness on how the event affects people from the region/country, broader effects on the country’s economy etc, the effect on Australia and effect on them or their family.
Week 2/3 Current Events: Kane M, Carrie, Hannah, Zoe, Nathan and Lachlan.
Inquiry: The inquiry topic this term is ‘Why Australia’. We have had a great start, with many of you getting involved in the Week 1 homework regarding your family’s history. We are focussing on ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors related to immigration in Australia, so keep up that discussion at home. We will be looking at various migrant stories. The topic will build up to the students creating a fictional character and writing a letter, or series of letters home, explaining their journey, based of course on research and real evidence.
Performing Arts Showcase this Wednesday night…the evening show is SOLD OUT! Tickets were handed out tonight (Monday). There is a matinee performance at 11:30 – 1:00pm. Tickets are $3:00, call Viv at the finance office to book these, 8270 4144.
