The Yr 4’s and 4/5 classes have been learning about the art movement ‘Op Art’ (optical art) and the artist Bridget Riley & MC Escher.

The mathematical style ‘Optical Art’ was first created by MC Escher in the early 1930’s , he was an expert at creating illusions through the volumes and shapes he included in his illustrations. He was an amazing mathematician and artist and combined his talents to create his famous works.

Bridget Riley is a British contemporary ‘Optical artist’  who was inspired by MC Escher’s earlier works. She has develop a more stylized, geometric version of ‘Optical Art’. Her work is mostly black and white large scale paintings and her work is known to cause motion sickness.

Her works are very graphic and are created so your eyes move around and back-and- forth across her paintings. This causes the illusion that they are moving. Our eyes are being tricked!!

The students were asked to create a cube with optical illusions drawn on each side of the cube. They needed to use very careful measurements and ruling up to create straight lines.
