🍎 What is the Right Bite Program? 🍏

Our school is committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of all students, and that’s why we’ve been transitioning towards using the South Australian Right Bite program in our canteen and food-related activities since 2023.

Right Bite helps schools make healthier food and drink choices available to students through a simple traffic light system:

🟢 Green – Best Choices
These are everyday foods like fresh fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, lean meats, dairy, and water.

🟠 Amber – Choose Carefully
These are foods that are okay occasionally, such as reduced-fat pastries, muffins, and some packaged snacks.

🔴 Red – Not Recommended or Limited
These are high in sugar, salt, or fat (e.g. soft drinks, deep-fried foods, lollies) and are only allowed on special occasions – or not at all.

This program applies to:

  • School canteen menus, OSHC and breakfast programs
  • Fundraisers, events, camps, and excursions, classroom rewards and activities

It’s all about creating a supportive environment where healthy choices are easy and appealing!

Since the beginning of 2025, we have removed or substituted more of our ‘Red’ items for healthier alternatives and have introduced a number of healthier meal options such as home-made pasta meals, chicken wraps, fruit & yoghurt-based treat items, gluten free menu items, and bliss balls.

We have also updated the online Qkr! menu to easily provide allergen advice for those who have allergies/intolerances for transparency. We are continually reviewing our menu for new items and other fun and appealing alternatives – so watch this space!

We are also on the lookout for any parent and/or grandparent volunteers to help in the canteen. You can volunteer for 10 minutes once (or twice!) a week, or even once a term! Your contributions big or small will help us continue to provide tasty treats for our children (plus, the children LOVE seeing you in there. You are treated like an absolute rockstar!)

We’ll continue to work with staff, students, and families to offer nutritious options that kids enjoy – and keep you updated along the way.

On behalf of our Governing Council, we thank you for supporting healthy habits at our school! 💚
