Puppet Making

It was with much anticipation that we prepared for our puppet making lesson. We had looked at puppet books to see the many types of puppets that could be made. Together we brainstormed the things we might need and we wrote procedures in our Inquiry books so that we knew the order to successfully complete our puppets.
Today was the day when we made them! Oh what wonderful creations the children made! It was two solid hours of drawing, cutting, pasting, hot glue gunning, unpulling, redesigning, talking, helping, thinking and completing!!
It was fantastic to see the children so engrossed in their work. It took persistance to come up with a model the children were happy with. Everyone was so proud of their creations and I was proud to see how well everyone worked.
Room 4 could not have made such lovely puppets without the help of the Mums. A big thankyou to you!
Today was one of our “BEST” days!

A Visit From Phil Cummings

We were so lucky to have the author Phil Cummings speak to us today. He told about where he gets his ideas for books from. As soon as he gets an idea he has to write them down. Do you know he has even written the outline of a story on a Qantas sick bag?! It might take up to a year to write a book and then many years until it is ready to be published. He needs Persistance and Resilience because the publishers often send Phil’s work back to him with corrections he needs to make. Phil can’t draw very well so he has to find an illustrator to draw the pictures for him. Phil said that sometimes it takes avery long time before he has just the right word to add to a story. Phil Cummings told us some wonderful stories and he made us laugh a lot! We can’t wait to read some more of his wonderful stories!

Happy Birthday Craigburn Primary School

Today was a very special day. It is the beginning of many exciting things planned for Craigburn Primary as we celebrate it’s 30th birthday. We had an assembly for the whole school and many people attended. It’s hard to believe that the school has been here that long. There have been many wonderful additions along the way to make Craigburn an exctiting and inviting place to be.

We had Parents and Grandparents in the audience as well as past members of Governing Council. Ian Evans our local Member of Parliament also attended.

It was particularly exciting for one of the the students in our class, because his Mum has had a connection to Craigburn since it began. She was very proud to cut the birthday cake.

Mrs. Rayner helped us sing a great song to celebrate Craigburn’s birthday and you can see most of the song here.

Please watch PhotoPeach for all the fun things that happened! We loved the cup cakes that every student got at Recess time! They were delicious!

Sports Day

Today was Sports Day at Craigburn Primary School. The four house teams of Riley (after Samantha Riley the swimmer), Bradman (after Sir Donald Bradman the cricketer), Woodforde (after Mark Woodforde the tennis player), and Fraser (after Dawn Fraser the swimmer), were all very excited and keen to do their very best.

We used the NED philosophy all day as we moved to each event.

Mr. Wait talked to us about having fun and good sportsmanship. We had a special guest open the Sports Day.His name is Paul Mildren. He played baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates and The Adelaide Bite.

It was a wonderful day and everyone had a fun time. I was so pleased to see everyone playing by the rules and encouraging their team mates. Congratulations to everyone! Please visit our TUMBLR site to see us doing our Dance session.

Watch the Slideshow to see all the fun things we did.

A Week Of Swimming

As part of our Health and Physical Education program, the children are encouraged to attend a week of swimming at our local centre. This year we went to the newly completed Marion Swimming Centre where the recent trials for the Olympics were held. Our lessons were 45 minutes long and all children whether competent swimmers or not were given the opportunity to gain extra skills and learn very important strategies when in water. All children were taught what to do when in danger and how to grab onto ropes or floats when needing to be pulled out of the water. The instructors all did a fantastic job and the children thoroughly enjoyed their lessons and were challenged and encouraged the whole time.

Please watch the slideshow of our time at the pool and see all the great things the children did.

Here is a movie of our last day at the pool. We had such a fun time!

March 31st Earth Hour

March 31st is Earth Hour. We need to do all we can to care for our planet. Will you turn out your lights for just one hour to show your support for such an important cause?
Participate in the world’s largest single campaign for the planet: Earth Hour. It starts by turning off your lights for an hour at 8:30 pm on March 31, 2012 in a collective display of commitment to a better future for the planet.

We will ask our families to turn off their lights on Saturday night and to look at the stars and remember how lucky we are to live on such a wonderful planet. Thank you to the Blogging Challenge for reminding us of this important date.

Harmony Day

March 21 is Harmony Day. The message for the day is ‘Everyone Belongs’.

It’s about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. The aim of Harmony Day 2012 is to encourage everyone, regardless of background to participate in a sporting activity, increase understanding and to be inspired or inspire others.

At Craigburn we had a special assembly  where we talked about including others and respecting everyone. We made balloons with our buddies and a badge to wear.

We also made a ‘friend’ who is wearing a Harmony Day t-shirt.
