Year 6 is a significant milestone for students as they step into leadership roles within our school community. As the most senior students, they can lead by example, inspire their peers, and contribute to a positive and inclusive school culture. Through leadership, students develop confidence, responsibility, and the ability to work collaboratively — essential skills that will benefit them beyond their primary years.
To support and nurture student leadership, we have established the Year 6 Leadership Teams program. This initiative provides all Year 6 students with the chance to demonstrate and develop essential leadership qualities that align with our school values. These qualities include resilience, teamwork, organisation, inclusivity, effective communication, confidence, and commitment.
Year 6 Leadership Teams
Students will have the opportunity to participate in one of four leadership teams, each with a distinct focus and set of responsibilities:
- Environmental Leaders – Promote sustainability, lead environmental projects, raise awareness about eco-friendly practices, and coordinate school garden activities.
- Be Active Leaders – Encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyles, organise sports day, support the Premier’s Be Active Challenge, and plan activities for PE Week.
- Student Representative Council (SRC) Executive Leaders – Lead SRC initiatives, facilitate school assemblies, mentor younger SRC members, and promote student voice within the school.
- Media and Communications Leaders – Use a range of media to publish to celebrate school events, contribute to school communications and promote student achievements.
Leadership Selection & Events
On Friday 7th February, students will learn more about how to nominate themselves for their preferred leadership teams. After learning about the responsibilities of each role, students will submit a nomination form outlining why they are suited for their preferred teams. Teachers will then collaborate to finalise team placements, and students will be informed of their leadership team. Students will receive details about the program and nomination form to take home.
To build leadership skills and teamwork, all Year 6 Leaders will participate in the ‘Beyond Limits Team Building Leadership Day’ (facilitated by Beyond Limits) at school on Friday, 14th February. Further details will be provided in a letter sent home.
Additionally, students will be formally acknowledged at a Leadership Assembly on Friday, 21st February, with their achievements shared through Craigburn Connections.
We are excited about the opportunities this program offers, empowering students to take on meaningful responsibilities and grow as confident leaders.
