Notan Art – Japanese Art Yr 1/2

Activity 1: Notan Art – Japanese art.

Elements of Art: shape

Principle of Art: contrast, balance

You will learn how to make a Notan piece of art and about how shape, contrast and balance work together.

Please look at the elements and principles posters of art under ‘Learning Resources’, so you understand what they are. #Remember darker coloured paper (black, red, dark blue) work the best for creating strong contrast, between the positive & negative shapes. Place your square paper on the angle for an interesting effect.

Materials needed: A4 white paper, dark coloured square paper (13x13cm or 14x14cm), lead pencil, scissors, glue stick.

Here is my example of a Notan design you can refer to when making your own. Please create your own designs.

Red design for Yr 2.    Green design for Yr 1

  1. Read through the slides.

2. Then watch the video to see how to make it.

Have fun making your Notan Art work 🙂

    • Hello Cherie,

Please use Seesaw as the uploading area. Take a photo in Seesaw and save it in the Visual Arts folder. If the teacher hasn’t got a folder please get them to set a folder up so images can be saved in there. Through that I can see what children have made.

      Many Thanks
      Nardene
