Book Boxes

We have been working on our Stamina as we read our books to ourselves each morning. We are able to read quietly, stay in one spot and remain focussed on our books for quite a long time.

This morning we were very excited because Mrs. K spoke to us about Book Boxes. We have our own boxes and into them we need to put good fit books so that we are able to continue with our great reading.

We got to go book shopping! We put all our books on the tables and we went round and chose books to put in our boxes. It was such fun! Now when we Read To Self and Read To Someone we will have lots of books in our boxes to read.

Reading

We love it when we go book shopping. We usually do it once a week and today was the day. We spread all our books out on the tables. Then we walk around the room and choose good fit books to put in our book boxes that we read for the week.

Our stamina is quite good  now and Mrs. K knows that we are able to read for a long time and stay focussed. Today was also a special day because we got to sit on lovely chairs while we read.

When we Read To Someone we also sat on the chairs together. We are trying very hard to ask each other questions so that we can check for understanding.

Here are some photos of us book shopping and reading to ourselves.

Do you read to each other in your class?

What sorts of books do you read?

Buddy Reading

Our buddy class has been practising reading with fluency just as we have.They went to the library and carefully chose books that would be a good fit book to read to us. They practised in their classroom and then came to read to us.
We listened to them read their books and then we shared the books in our book boxes to read with our buddies. It was a lovely way to share our reading skills.

Here we are reading together on PhotoPeach.

Do you have a buddy class that does fun things with you?
What sorts of activities do you do with them?

National Simultaneous Storytelling

After Recess today it was time for Simultaneous Storytelling.

Many thanks to Oakleigh State School for providing this information about
why this time is so significant and the many benefits that this type of storytelling has:

“National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 13th successful year it is a colourful, vibrant and fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children’s book that explores age appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Years 1 to 6.

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
By facilitating National Simultaneous Storytime we aim to;
promote the value of reading and literacy;
promote the value and fun of books;
promote an Australian writer and publisher;
promote storytime activities in libraries and
provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and the wider community to participate in and enjoy the occasion.”

This year the wonderful book called ‘The Wrong Book’ by Nick Brand is the chosen story.

Together with Room 3 we read about the author, and discussed the story. We read the story together on Mrs. K’s i-Pad. It was such a funny story!

Were you able to read or listen to the story today?

We can’t wait until next year for another simultaneous storytelling!

Book Boxes

Friday was a fun day for Room 4. We went shopping  to collect books to put in our new book boxes. Friday is the day when we go shopping so that the books are ready for us to read on Monday. This is the first time we have ever done this. We have been practising Read to Self and Read to Someone but it has just been with our readers. Today we looked for Good Fit books to put in our boxes so that as we build our Stamina, we will have many more books to read. We have to make sure that we read our readers first and then we can pick from our book boxes. To begin with we read at our tables but as we get better we look forward to finding lots of interesting places to read by ourselves.

We also enjoyed reading with our reading partner and we have started to ask our partners questions about what they have read, so that we can check for understanding. We ask questions that start with: When,Why, What,  Where, Who and How. As Year Ones, Mrs K is very pleased with the sorts of questions we are beginning to ask.

Mrs K will add more photos later as we continue to build our Stamina in reading.

Do you have book boxes? What sorts of books do you like to read?

Tic-Tac-Toe Reading

Every now and then we like to play this game. It’s really good for learning our sight words. The game is called Tic Tac Toe and we play it with a magic wand that helps us to remember our words. Sometimes we say the word and then put it into a sentence.

Here are the words to Tic Tac Toe and you can watch the movie to see how it’s done.

Tic Tac Toe around I go where I stop I do not know.

Reading

It was a beautiful day for the last day of Autumn.
We sat outside on the school steps and read.
We could read to ourselves or to someone. It was easy to increase our stamina because it was such a great way to read. We read our readers, books from the library and some fun readers Mrs. K found for us.
She was very happy with our reading because she could hear fluent readers, people reading with expression and lots of happy voices.
Here are some photos of room 4 being actively involved in their reading.

Daily 5-Word Work

During our word work session today we did activities that would help to consolidate our weekly spelling words. We practised Look, Cover, Write , Check on white boards. Some of us then used Bendaroos to make our words. Other people used foam and magnetic letters to make theirs. It was fun and a great way to learn at the same time!

After word work Mrs. Kolenberg read a story and we even found some of our words in the book!

Daily 5- Read To Someone

As part of The Daily 5 today we focussed on Read To Someone.

When you read to someone you:

-Sit EEKK (elbow to elbow, knee to knee)

-Use a soft voice

-Read the whole time

-Check for understanding

-Get started right away

-Put our books away properly.

We have to choose a partner and to do that we look around and make eye contact with someone. We walk over that person and ask them if they would like to be our partner. We are trying to build up our Stamina so that we can stay focussed on reading with someone for a longer period of time.

Here are some photos showing  you how we read to someone today.

Good Fit Books

Today rooms 3 and 4 talked together about picking books that are a good fit. Mrs. K and Miss C brought along some footwear and they talked about them having a specific purpose and that they  needed to fit to be worn successfully.

It’s the same when we read. We need to make sure the books we read are suitable for us and that we know the words and understand what we are reading.

Here is a sign that will help your child to remember to choose the perfect book!
