Cardboard Maze Challenge with Big Buddies

We had a fantastic Big Buddy session last Friday. We worked really well with our partners to design, create and make a cardboard maze.

This challenge followed our preparation for future our Genius Hour sessions. We’d also watched Caine’s Arcade to give us inspiration and ideas that we could use in our creations.

Our challenge required us to work quickly, plan our maze – double check that it worked, glue or stick materials to the board to make the actual maze and then test our models. The making part of this challenge used lots of joining techniques that we’d learnt in our most recent Inquiry topic.

We were really pleased with the results of our hard work – we’ve all used each other’s mazes and have enjoyed the challenge!

Here are some photos of our busy creating session and the finished items.

What did you think of your maze? What was your favourite part of our session?

Big Buddies

Our big buddy class is Mr Spurr’s Year 6/7 class. We love doing different activities with our buddies – even though the year has only just started. We meet with our buddies on Friday (usually) and we’re planning on doing a mixture of activities together during the year.

Last Friday we worked with our buddies to go on a nature hunt around the school. Our checklists included lots of different items to look for, for example: a variety of  leaves of different shapes and colours, nuts from a wide variety of trees, a triangular rock, a Y shaped stick…..just to name a few. We had to really search throughout the school yard to find all of the different items.

We co-operated well with our bug buddies to work as a successful team  in order to find all of the items on our checklists.

Gardening in the ELC

Today we planted our broad bean and peas into the raised garden beds in the ELC (Environmental Learning Centre).

Two weeks ago we planted bean and peas seeds into tins that we’d collected and we’ve been watering them and watching them grow.

Today we planted them into the ELC gardens with our big buddies. We needed to dig holes to plant our seedlings, push some pea straw around the seedlings and make sure they were watered in. We’ve planted them around some  trellis’ so that the seedlings can climg up them.

Here’s some photos of our session today.

Big Buddies!

Toady we had another session with our big buddies. We just love working with them. They have wonderful role models to use – they are kind, caring, helpful and we really enjoy their company. Today we used all of our devices to explore the different apps we use in our learning at school. We played some games like Subway Surfer, Super 7, Pearl Diver, wrote stories using Storykit and read some Storychimes books.

Here’s some photos of our great session today.

Buddy Class Visit

Last Friday we had our first Buddy Class visit for the year. Mrs Robertson’s year 6/7 class are our buddies – we’ve even got some of the same people in her class from last year. We had a quick get-to-know you activity and played buddy bingo! We found a buddy and then had a quick chat to find out information about each other. Then we interviewed others in the classes to find out more information about everyone.

Here’s  a few photos of our session.

Tell us about your buddy and maybe suggest some activities to do together.

Bookweek with our Buddies

On Friday we wrote stories with our older buddies. We used the app called StoryKit and started writing our own stories. First we discussed and shared our ideas and then typed the story onto the devices. We started adding pictures and will add our voices this week.

Here are some photos from our first writing session together.

We will post links to the stories as they are finished.
