Last week our Reception – Year 5 students participated in swimming lessons at Marion Indoor Swimming Centre. Here are our reflections of the week.

What was your favourite part of our swimming week?

What were your highlights from swimming lessons?

What’s something you’d like to learn at swimming lessons in 2017?

Daily 5 CAFE Reading

We read everyday in our class because it’s so important to practise all the time!

We use the Daily 5 CAFE model in our reading every day. We choose a different reading strategy to focus on. CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding vocabularyEach of these areas are really important for and as good readers we know we need to practise them everyday.

We have our CAFE menu on display in our classroom and use it all the time. As we practise each specific reading strategy we add it to our CAFE menu – we often go back and refer to our menu when we’re reading.

This week we are working on:

Check for understanding.

As we read our good fit books we always ask ourselves-

  • Does this make sense?
  • Remember did I read and  try to retell the story.
  • Use the pictures as clues.

Accuracy

We have also learnt about this strategy-

  • Use the pictures – do the words and pictures match. (How can we use this to help us understand the story?)

What books do like to read?

What areas of reading would you like to learn this year?

What reading strategies do you use when you read?

Big Buddies Reading Picnic

Today we went outside for a reading picnic with our buddies. It was a lovely cool morning to sit outdoors and do lots of reading. We took our boxes of good fit books and picnic blankets and read for over 30 minutes.

We had a great time outside – our buddies shared reading with us – we read to them and then they read to us. It was lots of fun.

Big Buddies

Our big buddy class is Mr Spurr’s Year 6/7 class. We love doing different activities with our buddies – even though the year has only just started. We meet with our buddies on Friday (usually) and we’re planning on doing a mixture of activities together during the year.

Last Friday we worked with our buddies to go on a nature hunt around the school. Our checklists included lots of different items to look for, for example: a variety of  leaves of different shapes and colours, nuts from a wide variety of trees, a triangular rock, a Y shaped stick…..just to name a few. We had to really search throughout the school yard to find all of the different items.

We co-operated well with our bug buddies to work as a successful team  in order to find all of the items on our checklists.

Listen to Reading

Our class has been developing our reading skills using the Daily 5 CAFE program to help us.

On different days of the week we do:

  • read to self
  • partner reading
  • listen to reading.

Every Tuesday we use our iPads and iPods to listen to stories being read to us. We use different apps to listen to stories or we use the Ziptales website – we LOVE this site as there are lots of different books for different levels of reading skills. There’s a good fit book on the site for our entire class.

Here’s photos from today’s session.

Daily 5 Reading

As we’ve returned to school for a new year of learning we started our Daily 5 reading CAFE learning as soon as we came back!

Everyone has their book boxes set up with good fit books and we’ve started building our stamina for ‘read to self’. Everyone is doing a wonderful job a reading for the entire time and staying focussed on their books. We LOVE our buckets that we use during read to self time – they’re so comfy!

We’ve used our iPads and iPods for ‘listen to reading’ using one of our favourite websites called Ziptales.

Today we had our first session of ‘partner reading’. WE EEKK’d (elbow to elbow, knee to knee) and had a great time sharing books with our partners.

Here’s some photos from this weeks reading sessions.
