Craigburn’s Got Talent

Today we held our annual talent show called Craigburn’s Got Talent. Over the last 3 weeks we’ve held auditions – open to every student in our school. Today we held the final with so many different items.

We had self composed songs, dance routines, gymnastic dances, cheerleading routines, instrumental music- sax, coronet, trombone & voice, drums and guitar, flute, magic tricks, skipping item and violin.

Today’s winner was Amber – she sang a song that she’d written herself and composed the music to.

Second were Pink Lemonade with a cheerleading item – a very slick routine.

Third was a gymnastics dance item by Tyla, Ava K and Sandra with their gymnastics dance routine.

An Honourable Mention went to Ethan – a past winner- for playing 4 instruments as well as voice – an amazing item!

We’d like to say a huge congratulations to Jaime and Tara from our class for reaching the finals. They were the opening act for the entire show – not an easy job! Well done girls – our whole class LOVED your dance item – all of those rehearsals paid off – you did a wonderful job!

Here’s just some of the items from today’s performance.

Personal Inquiry

This week we went back to our free choice for Personal Inquiry time (Genius Hour). We worked on areas that we are passionate about – we’ve been talking a lot about what we love and love to learn about.

This was our second to last session for the year as it’s nearly time for holidays! The children worked independently, solved problems, prioritised their time, collected their resources and made some amazing creations.

What do you think about our creations?

Personal Inquiry: The Paper Only Challenge

Last Friday we continued our learning journey with our Personal Inquiry time. This week we had a paper only challenge – which really got  all of the class thinking about their different options.  I think you’ll agree that the children showed just how creative they can be!! We loved using Art books and Pinterest for ideas – plus had some great conversations as a class to develop our ideas.

Sports Expo

Today we had our Year 2, 3 and 4 Sports Expo. We had a fantastic time learning how to play new sports and gaining new game skills.

This year the sports we practised were:

  • soccer
  • cricket
  • gymnastics
  • totem tennis and commando relays
  • basketball and
  • air gym.

It was lots of fun learning how to play different sports that we’d never done before and we really enjoyed trying new sports.

Thanks to Mrs Pettman who organised our events- great job!

Here’s some pictures and videos of our activities.

Gala Day

On Friday we had our annual Gala Day. This is an opportunity for the Craigburn students to have a stall for the students to visit. This year we had over 40 stalls and there was a real variety on offer for our students to experience.

Members of our class held  4  stalls. They were:

  • Decorate your own Cake – buy a cupcake, ice it and decorate it with lollies
  • Bits n Bobs- selling a variety of cards, bookmarks, keyring and grass heads
  • Footy Kick – knock the pins down with a footy kick
  • Hit the Target & Marble Run – how high can you score but throwing a tennis ball through the target and how fast can you roll a marble through the marble run track (inspired by our work on Genius Hour activities).

The students who don’t run a stall can visit the stalls to buy food, drinks or play some sort of game.

Gala Day is a wonderful chance for our students to show how enterprising they can be. They spent a lot of time planning their stall, working out what the students would like to do/ eat, what prizes they’d need to offer, where to get the prizes, how much their stall activity would cost for students to try and advertise their stalls prior to the day.

They had to really work well together – using lots of different skills like – co-operating, compromising, collaborating, using team work skills, using lots of Mathematics for adding amounts and giving change, problem solving and so many more skills.

We felt very proud of our students for running a stall – they were all a great success. The children LOVED every minute of their day. It was a very windy day and there were lots of issues from the wind but we overcame the difficulties to have a highly profitable and fun day.The money raised will go towards school resources like: outdoor furniture, new 4 square courts and other resources that have been nominated by classes through their class meetings.

We’d like to say  a huge thank you to our families who are a HUGE support – they help all of our children with materials for their stalls, as well as providing money to spend on the day.

Music is Fun Band

Today we saw the Music is Fun Band perform at school. We had an AMAZING time at the concert and loved every minute of it. Our class had people in 2 items – It’s a Long Way to the Top and a song from the Lion King musical.  Who knew we had so many children in our class who could play the bagpipes!!?? It was wonderful to see everyone up and dancing and really loving the music. We can’t wait for the 2015 concert.

Personal Inquiry

This week our class had a long discussion with Miss Humphrys’ class next door about our Personal Inquiry time investigations. We have a huge focus on developing our creativity skills, along with many others. However, we needed to revisit what we are really passionate about, what interests us the most and what we want to investigate during our personal inquiry time. Miss Sporn had been to a Inquiry conference with Kath Murdoch and had some new suggestions and ideas for us getting back into what we’re really passionate about – not just what we might be interested in.

We’ve got new lists of what each of us love the most and plan to add to these lists often.  Our lists have reminded us what we love most and how we should use these passions to really drive our Personal Inquiry times. We’ve watched some Youtube clips and looked at Pinterest for new ideas and suggestions – we feel really excited about refocussing our passions and keeping our creativity alive.

This week’s session was really interesting. We had lots of variety in the models created and you can see stage 1 of a massive mural near the end of the slide show – we can wait to see the finished product.

Next week our topic is Earth Art – can you think of what we might be investigating? Can you make any suggestions for our next session?

Heroes – Australian of the Year

As a part of our  current Inquiry topic about Heroes in our Community we have researched different Australian’s of the Year.  The children did their research as part of their preparation for Sharing Time and presented their understandings to the whole class.

It was very interesting to hear about all of the wonderful Australians who have won Australian of the Year and how they contribute to our country. Some of the people were: Adam Goodes, Paul Hogan, Tim Conolon, Arthur Boyd, Fred Hollows, Steve Waugh, Dr Fiona Wood, Sally Goold, Dawn Fraser, Jessica Watson, Cathy Freeman and General Peter Cosgrove. We had some people repeat that same Australian of the Year but they chose different information to present.

A major part of our conversations about these famous Australians was why they were chosen by the students in our class and how each of our students related to their choice. We really valued what they’ve contributed to Australia – in so many ways. The children think we are lucky to live in a country that has some many wonderful people contributing to it’s rich diversity.

We’re going a on a reading picnic!

Today our class went on a reading picnic. It was such a lovely day outside we decided to read outside and enjoy the warm weather. We packed our picnic blankets, book boxes, chairs and pillows. We went out to the oval and sat under the shade of the big gum tree and got into our reading.

We did read to self or read with a partner and loved our reading picnic.

Here’s the photos from our picnic.

Personal Inquiry Time – Genius Hour

With a new term upon us, everyone in the class was very excited to be getting back into our Personal Inquiry time. This week we had lots of new creations made and it was another busy session. Lots of class members already had ideas that they were keen to pursue and couldn’t wait to get started. Our making time was busy and everyone in the class was highly independent and worked collaboratively with each other.

Some of our creations were:

  • cardboard arcade games – continuing a different weekly game being made. Their goal is to create an arcade of games to be played by students in our courtyard area during recess and lunch times.
  • ‘shape it’ models (a fast setting paper mache material) e.g.  a volcano
  • iMovies
  • Boxtroll models.
  • clay model pencil holders – added to a cardboard desk organiser
  • Chupa-chupa art work
  • just to name a few!

Reflection:

A major part of our session is the ‘gallery walk’ we do at the end of our session. Each person/ group explains their creation so we are clued in to the details presented in their creations – it gives all of us the best chance to fully understand their ideas.

We complete a self reflection sheet that’s a part of our initial planner. It gives us a chance to explain what went well, what we could improve, the skills we’re developing and how well we worked with others.

The reflection session also includes class discussions. Our reflections are vital to our learning – we’re tracking our own learning and learning from others too.

Here’s our latest photos.

Next week we are having “the paper challenge”. What can you create using paper – of any kind!!???
