Book Sale!

Today we held our very first book sale!
The students were asked to bring along a book that they would like to “sell” to the class. Obviously we didn’t actually sell our books for money BUT this book sale was about advertising and promoting books you’ve liked to others in the class.

The children had a week to decided which books they would like to “sell” to their classmates and had to decide what would make others interested in reading a new book. We’ve noticed that we all like to read but sometimes we get stuck reading the same series of books or the same type of stories.

A book sale is a great way to introduce readers to different kinds of books – maybe some that they wouldn’t have thought to read before.

We had 6 very brave people who joined our very first book sale. They were Emma, Lucy, Sarah, Oscar, Nathan and Maisie. Each of these student talked about a different book or in some cases they couldn’t pick just one book and brought a few along. Thanks to the 6 fantastic students who had a go at our very first book sale – we were impressed with your talks. Emma had even written notes to help her speak in a clear way to us.

These students talked about:

  • what the story was about
  • who it would be a “good fit book” for
  • what made it an interesting story
  • who might like it
  • the pictures matching the words
  • if it was part of a series of books
  • who the author was
  • where the book came from – the school library or our community library
  • and lots of other information.
Here are some photos of the presenters – congratulations guys on a wonderful booksale.
Our audience loved hearing about these books and are going to find them in the Library at school or our Community Library.

What books can you recommend for our class to try reading? We’d love to hear about some new titles.

Camp Quality Play

Today we saw the Camp Quality Puppet Show at school.
The play was about a little girl called, Kylie, who had cancer and had chemotherapy as her treatment.

Kylie met her friend Deano after she had finished her chemotherapy treatment. It was Kylie’s first day back at school, after being away for 3 months. Kylie felt very nervous being back at school and how she looked now after her treatment. At first Deano teased Kylie because her hair had fallen out and she looked as pale as a ghost. Kylie was also very skinny. Kylie’s feelings were very hurt when Deano teased her. BUT Deano realised his mistake and knew he needed to apologise.
After Kylie had explained her cancer and the treatment Deano said sorry and that made Kylie feel a lot better inside. Deano realized that it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside – it’s what’s in the inside that counts.

We really enjoyed the play and we learnt a lot about cancer and how to treat it. We also learnt some important messages about not teasing people and treating them fairly.

Some of the values and behaviours we admired in the play were:
➢ Don’t be a bully
➢ It’s what’s on the inside that counts
➢ Be kind
➢ Be caring
➢ Be thoughtful
➢ Don’t tease others because they are different
➢ Accept and respect differences
➢ It’s not cool to be cruel!
➢ Work together
➢ Be friendly to others
➢ Use nice words
➢ Be happy
➢ Be positive
➢ Be welcoming
➢ Use your manners
➢ Be brave
➢ Be respectful

What do you think of the values and behaviours we’ve listed above – do you think they relate to our unit of Inquiry about Heroes?

Year 3 Swimming

Last week our Year 3 students went to swimming lessons at the Noarlunga Leisure Centre. We caught the bus each day at 12.15 and returned at hometime. This was the first year that the students swam for  1 1 /2 hours each day – they were exhausted by the end of the week.

Each student was placed into different groups and then learnt lots of new skills to improve their skills. For example – swimming freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, survival skills, saving/ rescue skills, diving skills, learning to tread water, using kick boards and lots lots more!!!

On Friday we got to have some “fun” activities – we all had a turn on the fun run and the Tarzan rope. The last activity was doing aquarobics – dancing to music.

We had a great week.

Here are just some  of our photos.

Family Blogging Month Challenge

Custom Glitter Text
WOW!!! What a wonderful blogging month we’ve had. The support from the class members, their families and friends has been just amazing. We’ve loved reading blog comments everyday – our blog is such an easy way for us to stay in touch with our online friends. Thank you to ALL of our families and friends for supporting us by posting blog comments.

We’ve had lots of comments from nearly every family in the class.

We’d like to say “congratulations” to Maisie.

Maisie and her family made the most comments on the blog – especially in the last few days.

Today we presented Maisie with her certificate and she’s chosen to have her own page on this blog- we’re looking forward to seeing her future posts.

We’d also like to congratulate our runner up Sienna. Sienna has also made lots and lots of comments on the blog – she was very determined to do really well on this challenge!!!

Here’s Maisie!

Craigburn Primary’s 30th Birthday

Today we held a special assembly  to celebrate our school’s 30th birthday. The assembly was hosted by Mr Wait and we had a group of special guests speak to us about what makes Craigburn Primary such a fantastic school. Mr Ian Evans, a local MP, spoke to us and three parents who were on our Governing Council also spoke to us.

We looked at all the different programmes our school has offered over the years and it was great fun to see lots of photos of our students involved in the many programmes we have, for example: the Environmental Learning Centre, German, Music, Resource Based Learning with Mrs Langham, Buddy class activities – and the list goes on.

Here are some photos Will took for our blog. Thanks Will.

At the end of the assembly every student received a cup cake as a part of the celebrations and parents were invited to a morning tea.

Have you filled a bucket today?

Today we read a book called “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McLeod.

It’s a book about that is a guide to daily happiness for your child.

We read the book as a whole class and just loved it. The concept of the story is

Everyone carries an invisible bucket that holds our good thoughts and feelings. When our  buckets are full, we feel happy and when our buckets are empty, we feel sad.

The message from the story taught us that everyone has an invisible bucket and that all of us can fill other people’s buckets – being a bucket filler. By adding to someone else’s bucket you also fill your own bucket too. BUT if you are negative or don’t behave the right way you are a bucket dipper and sadly your bucket will be empty. Bullies are bucket dippers. The best thing about bring a bucket filler is that it doesn’t have to cost a cent. It could be a smile, a high five, a little thank you note….. and so many other ideas. Aren’t these great positive messages to send to each other.

We ADORED this book. We’d love for everyone to read it. We were so excited about the story and it’s message that we just HAD to make our own buckets straight away. We’ve even loaned the book to some other classes so they could fill their buckets too.

Here are our buckets.

Have you read the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? We’d love to hear what you thought of the story. Please let us know.

Can you make any suggestions on how we could fill other people’s buckets?

Please leave us a comment on the blog – it will help to fill our buckets!!!

Years 2-4 Assembly

Today Miss Hunt’s Year 2 class hosted our Years 2-4 assembly. We thought they did a great job – it’s not easy hosting an assembly.

Some of the items were sharing writing stories, with the use of adjectives, and our Girls Junior Choir sang a song. They sounded wonderful. Well done to Mrs Rayner who is the choir co-ordinator.

Congratulations to the three members of our class earned awards.

Oscar: for great work across all areas of the curriculum.

Will: for developing his computing skills and being able to run all of the music and IT needs for assemblies (check out his photo below)

Hannah: for detailed Art work using Aboriginal drawing techniques and colours and writing a detailed story to match this picture.

Mrs Gillespie presented the awards today on behalf of Mr Wait our Principal. Here are some photos of the assembly.

Here are some photos from today’s assembly.

Family Blogging Month

Wow – we’re already in the fourth and final week of our Family BloggingChallenge.

Again, we’d like to thank everyone who has visited our site and posted a comment. We’ve loved reading the variety of comments – especially the ones linked to our Blogging Challenge questions. The Blogging Challenge is such a valuable way for our families  and friends way to keep in touch with what’s happening in our class.

We HOPE everyone keeps visiting our blog and posting comments, even when the Challenge month has finished.

So for our last challenge question(s):

  • What do you think of the “May Family Blogging Challenge Month?”
  • Which family members did you invite to comment?
  • Which blog posts do you think your family or friends liked to comment on?
  • What would you like to see on our blog? Do you have any suggestions that we may find useful when we add posts to our blog?

Relaxing!!

After a week of working hard on our NAPLAN assessments we relaxed and really enjoyed our afternoon with a Play session. We had lots of different activities happening – computing, iPads being used, reading, dress ups, art/ craft, outdoor games, model making and the list goes on!!!

Well done to our Year 3 students who all worked really hard and tried their best on their tests. Also, our Year 2 students were fantastic at getting organised and being ready to work in Miss Hunt’s Year 2 class – thanks for having our stars Miss Hunt!

Here are some pictures of our afternoon.
