11/11/11 @ 11am.
Today Remembrance Day.
TODAY, Remembrance Day falls on the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year of this century.
It is a truly historic day, and in a special tribute to those who have served and sacrificed under the banner of the Australian Defence Forces.
Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to remember the official end of World War I on that date in 1918; fighting ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” of 1918.
The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem “In Flanders Fields”. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war.
Our class will be a part of the whole school assembly at 11am. We will meet in our Hall to remember all of the soldiers who have fought for our country.
This week we displayed some poppy art work in our front office.
Here are some examples of our work. We encourage you to come in and look at all of the paintings – they look quite stunning all on display.
