Musical Chairs Reading

Last Friday we finished our wonderful week at school with a game of Reading Musical chairs. We made a circle with our classroom chairs and a mixture of books were placed on them. When the music started we needed to walk around the circle of chairs, when the music stopped we sat on the nearest chair and started reading the books on it.

This is a wonderful chance to read different types of books that we may not usually choose. The books on the chairs were:

  • picture fiction
  • non fiction (facts & information)
  • novels
  • books without words – you have to create your own story in your mind

At the end of our session we reflected upon it. We all agreed that it was a fun way to read books that we wouldn’t usually choose and when we went to the Resource Centre to borrow our Library books for the week many children chose some new types of books.

Here’s some photos of our reading session.

Jaime and Holly’s Recorder Song

Jaime and Holly have been learning how to play the recorder. Their teacher is Sarah and each week they have lessons at school with Sarah. They also need to do lots of practise at home.

Today Sarah came and helped the girls play a couple of songs for our class. We thought they were very brave to perform in front of us, especially given that they have only been learning the recorder for about 8 weeks.

Here’s the songs they played.

Safety Assist Visit

Today we had Rona from Safety Assist visit our school as a part of our Safety unit of inquiry. She talked to us and explained how Safety Assist houses/ places in our community can help to keep us safe. Safety Assist used to be known as Safety Houses.

Rona explained that Safety Assist places always show the red and yellow signs in their windows, on  letterboxes or on street signs, there is a smily face on the signs. Rona also explained that if you are feeling unsafe, feel threatened, are lost or need help for some reason you can go into a Safety Assist place and they will help you.

Places that offer Safety Assist help can be:

  • Fire stations
  • Police stations
  • houses
  • shops
  • schools
  • Public Libraries
  • Australia Post Offices
  • businesses
  • Surf Life Saving patrol bases
  • Banks

These places will get help for you straight away and make sure you are safe very quickly.

What message did you learn from today’s Safety Assist visit?

Talented Musicians!!

Yesterday the class invited me into watch their music lesson with Mrs Rayner.

They were just soooo talented!!!! What clever musicians!!

Mrs Rayner is an amazing teacher to have the whole class playing together so musically.

The class were improvising in a song called Reggae Hey! They played accompaniments to the Reggae beat.

It was wonderful to see the children playing the different musical instruments – like marimbas, glockenspiels, percussion egg (shakers) and xylophones.

Next time I’m going to record them playing so you can hear how talented they are!

Here’s some photos from the song.

Tell us what you thought of your lesson – which instrument were you playing?

Clean Up Australia Day

Last Friday all of the classes at Craigburn Primary joined the Clean Up Australia campaign.  The school was divided into 3 sections and classes were given an area to clean up. We collected rubbish around the oval, Upper Primary playground and down to the bottom pick up area. We found paper, lids, cans, lots of plastic wrap and even a dead lizard!

We had lots of fun cleaning up our school grounds and love to look after our school.

Did you join in the official Clean Up Australia Day campaign in your local neighbourhood?

What kinds of rubbish did you find?

Weekly Cooking Activity

Each week we have had groups doing cooking activities with Aimee’s mum and Jackson’s mum. Our class is divided into 6 small groups and we take turns at cooking something different. For our first lot of cooking we made pizzas. We used a muffin base, tomato paste, pineapple, ham and cheese for our toppings. Everyone got to choose their own toppings and added what they like to eat. We’ve finished our first round of cooking and this week we are starting a new recipe. Can anyone guess what we might be making – a couple of the ingredients are flour, sugar and oats (but there’s more)  – what do you think we are making?

Here’s our pizza photos.

Exciting news everyone!

Hi Classmates – I’ve just received a letter to say that we’re going on camp to Arbury Park Outdoor School from the 6th-8th of November. Isn’t that exciting news. I know it’s a long way off but I’m sure it’ll be so much fun.

Here’s a link to the school’s website so you can see what we might be doing when we go on camp.

Have you looked at the website – what activities are you looking forward to ?

Merry Christmas to Everyone!!!

We’ve been getting ready for Christmas. Today we went to the presentation by the local churches to participate in different Christmas activities and learn about why we celebrate Christmas.

We’ve also been making lots of Christmas decorations – many thanks to the children who have been teaching us how to make a simple Christmas decoration – plus providing all of the materials.

Here’s a bit of Christmas fun from the Jib Jab website. We hope you really enjoy our movies!!!

Daily Fitness

Today we played one our ‘old’ Daily Fitness games called Toilet Chasey. It’s like playing stuck in the mud but when you are caught by a ‘catcher’ you have to squat down, circle your arms to make a toilet seat and wait for someone to real ease you by sitting on the toilet and flushing it (by tapping you on the head). It’s lots of fun and we really enjoyed it. We originally learnt it from a visiting teacher who taught us how to play. We really like it as a fitness game because we run a lot and then catch our breath when we’re caught and then take off again running. Everyone gets a turn at being a catcher – we turn our hats inside out so we know they’re catchers!

Here’s some photos of our fitness session.

What are some of your favourite daily fitness games? Can you teach us how to play it?

Global Children’s Walking Challenge

Congratulations to everyone in our class who joined in for the Global Children’s Walking Challenge. Last Thursday we finished the Global Children’s Walking Challenge. Our class finished in Lake Sagami-ko in Japan. We didn’t quite make the official finish in Antarctica but made a huge effort to finish. Our final position on the leader board was 302 in the world – which is pretty amazing. Our class worked really hard as a team to collect as many steps as possible and we loved learning about all of the locations around the world. It was fascinating to learn about cities and countries that we’d never heard of before.

Here’s our final position on the leader board.
