Bushfire Drill

Yesterday we practised what we need to do if a bush fires comes near our school. We went through the three different stages of our bushfire drill. A drill means we practise what we need to do if a fire comes near the school. At the end of the bushfire drill we left our building and went to the safety of the gym with our water bottles, towels and school bags. Then Mr Luke talked to us about why we need to practise in case a fire comes near our school and what to do in an emergency.

How do you think the bushfire drill went? What lessons did you learn from our practise?

Did the bushfire drill help us with our inquiry unit learning?

End of Term Assembly – Official Opening of the Environmental Learning Centre

On the last day of term we held our end of term assembly out on the steps by the brand new Environmental Learning Centre. A huge amount of time and planning has gone into the development of the Environmental Learning Centre. Over the last 3 years Mr Luke, our Deputy Principal, the parents on the Environment Committee and the student representatives on the Environmental Committee have all worked towards developing this wonderful and exciting learning area. Miss Grant and Miss Humphrey’s have also done an amazing job to help develop this centre.

The Environmental Learning Centre has many different features like: raised garden beds, a creek, planting areas, seed propagating areas, work benches fruit trees, a recycling centre and the composting area.

Every class in the school created items for the Environmental Learning Centre. Some of the items are:

  • scarecrows
  • garden pet rocks
  • flowers that never die (our activity)
  • God’s eyes – weaving with natural items collected from all over the school yard
  • a tiled mosaic
  •  wind chimes
  • a bird bath
  • a totem pole – which will display the official plaque naming the centre
  • light reflectors  – reused CD’s to scare birds away

just to name a few!!!

We all were encouraged to wear green on the day or environmental/ natural colours

During the day each class and their older buddies went out for a sensory tour of the new garden centre. Students from Miss Grant’s welcomed each class to the centre and explained the activities that we would be doing – planting, photo hunts to identify different areas of the garden, signing the visitor’s book and many other activities.

Everyone was asked to bring at least one recyclable item – cans and bottles – to contribute towards the fundraising efforts of the centre. It also reminded us just how easy it is to recycle materials.

We had a sausage sizzle lunch – this was hosted by the school canteen. YUM!!!

As a part of our assembly presentations were made to celebrate the incredible successes of:

  • our Pedal Prix team – bike 88 came 3rd and bike 111 came 10th in the 24 hour race at Murray Bridge – congrats to Mr Lemmey and his Year 6/7 teams
  • our State Champion Netball Knockout netball team – congrats to Mrs Pettman and the team
  • our State Champion Basketball team – more congrats to Mr Nash (Will’s Dad in our class) and Mrs Pettman

Here are some photos of our FANTASTIC last day of term!

What did you think of our Environmental Learning Centre – do you have a favourite part of the Centre?

Open Night

Tonight we held Open Night at school. We all love Open Night as it gives everyone a chance to show their learning in every classroom in the school. Our choirs performed in the Hall, the Pedal Prix team held a BBQ to raise funds for their team and then classrooms were open for everyone to tour.

This is a wonderful opportunity for every student and their families to tour our school. We can share our learning in so many different ways- showing our books, work on display around the room, learning on computers and iPads or iPods, models we’ve made and the list goes on.

What was your favourite part of Open Night at Craigburn Primary School?

30th Birthday Posters

As a part of our school’s 30th birthday celebrations each class was asked to create a poster that celebrated some part of our life at Craigburn Primary School.
These posters were hung today along the hallways of our main building. There are wonderful, colourful and interesting creations.

Please come in and look at these posters – tell us what you think of them.

Phil Cummings Author Visit

Today our class had a very special visitor. It was an author called Phil Cummings. He has written over 70 books and is from South Australia. Phil came to talk with us about what it’s like to be an author – where he gets his ideas/ inspirations, all the steps that go into writing a book, when he likes to write ( at 2 AM ), how he works with his publishers to get his ideas into a book, how he works with illustrators and so much more.

Phil is an amazing storyteller! We LOVED listening to Phil tell us how he got lots of the  ideas behind his stories. He used different voices, facial expressions and hand gestures to really make his stories come alive!

We’re really looking forward to reading lots of his books – best of all our Library has most of his books. Lots of them will be a “good fit” book.

Here are some photos of Phil reading one of his stories.

New Garden Development

Today a new garden area was finished by the gardeners. It is next to the lower courts, that were resurfaced, and it has rocks, new trees, shrubs and native grasses planted. There are also gravel paths through the whole garden area.
Our class thought it looked great. Here’s a couple of photos we took today.

Craigburn Primary’s 30th Birthday

Today we held a special assembly  to celebrate our school’s 30th birthday. The assembly was hosted by Mr Wait and we had a group of special guests speak to us about what makes Craigburn Primary such a fantastic school. Mr Ian Evans, a local MP, spoke to us and three parents who were on our Governing Council also spoke to us.

We looked at all the different programmes our school has offered over the years and it was great fun to see lots of photos of our students involved in the many programmes we have, for example: the Environmental Learning Centre, German, Music, Resource Based Learning with Mrs Langham, Buddy class activities – and the list goes on.

Here are some photos Will took for our blog. Thanks Will.

At the end of the assembly every student received a cup cake as a part of the celebrations and parents were invited to a morning tea.

Sports Day 2012

Last Friday we had our whole school Sports Day. It was a fantastic day and we really enjoyed our day. We worked really hard to be supportive team members and gave lots of positive encouragement to our team mates.

Riley ( the red team) won Sports Day – Congratulations to the whole team!

Fraser came second, Bradman was third and Woodforde came fourth.

Our programme for the day was:

  • March onto the oval in our house teams – Fraser, Riley, Woodforde and Bradman
  • Do the Health Hustle
  • Listen to the opening speech by our Principal Mr Wait and the Premier’s Be Active Challenge special guest Paul Mildren. Paul is a pitcher with the Adelaide Bite – the Adelaide baseball team in the national competition.
  • Compete in our tabloid events
  • Recess & lunch breaks
  • Running the whole school relay – with representatives from each year level
  • Sprints – each house team is represented by their fastest runners
  • Presentation of the Championship Shield.
Tabloid Events
Vortex Throw – we had to throw a vortex up the hill as far as we could.

Bocce – each team had 1 person roll their bocce ball to see who could throw it closest to the white ball. We played bocce in the Hall.

Long jump
We ran along the green mats and pushed off into the long jump sand pit – trying to jump as far as possible.

Sprints
We ran in a series of races over 100m.

Three legged race
This relay was in pairs because we had to tie our middle legs together. We needed to work really well as a team to make sure our legs moved at the same time as our partners! It was really tricky – then we asked our parents and grandparents to have a go! It was lots of fun!

Sack race
In our house teams we got into a sack and jumped up to a marker and back to our team.

Soccer kick

We needed to kick as many soccer goals as possible.

Harmony Day

Today we celebrated Harmony Day at school and all around Australia. The message for Harmony Day in 2012 is that Everyone Belongs, which means all Australians are a welcome part of our country, regardless of their background. It’s a time to reflect on where Australia has come from, recognising the traditional owners of this land. It’s also about community participation, inclusiveness and respect – celebrating the different cultures that make Australia a great place to live.

We celebrate the cultural diversity of our nation.

Orange is the colour that we wear to show our support for Harmony Day.

OUR SLEG students held a Harmony Day assembly to show what each class had done to celebrate the day and to discuss what Harmony Day means for all of us.

Here are the photos from our day:

Special Guest – Lorin Nicholson

On Wednesday Craigburn Primary was very lucky to have a special visitor.
It was Lorin Nicholson. Lorin is a motivational speaker and one of Australia’s leading guitarists. Lorin has been legally blind since birth but hasn’t let that stop him from achieving some amazing things. In 2009 he was nominated for Young Australian of the Year for his work in the community, he has ridden a bicycle from Perth to Sydney – over 4000km and he loves to work in schools and talk with students about his hopes and aspirations.

As a part of Lorin’s See Sharp presentation he delivers a messages about:

  • Choice & Attitude
  • Overcoming negativity & Peer Pressure
  • Teasing/Bullying
  • Respect & Inclusion
  • Resilience & Perseverance
  • Confidence & Self Esteem
  • Setting & Achieving Goals
  • Building Future Leaders & Striving for Excellence
The class has talked so positively about Lorin’s visit – they loved the entire performance. He certainly got his message across to the entire audience.
Here are some photos of the presentation.
