Technology Challenge

As a part of our current Inquiry topic ‘Amazing Engineers’ we were given a challenge.

The challenge was:

Biggles our class bear is exhausted! He needs a chair or seat of some kind to rest on. Create a design of your model, collect the materials you’ll need and start making your model.

**** Keep in mind the different ways you can join materials that we have on our class charts!

Here are the final products. When we reflected upon our models we had lots of success and some things to consider for the future. It was  great to see so many people choosing a variety of joining techniques to create sturdy, strong and stable models.

Tell us what you think of our models – we’d love your feedback.

Indigenous Weaving

Today we worked with Miss A as we continue to learn about Indigenous people in Australia.
As a part of our activities we did some weaving with plants that are local to the area we live in, which is the same land of the Kaurna people. We looked at the plants Aborignals use for weaving and other ways that these plants can be used. When Aborignals do weaving it can be to create many different objects they need for their daily lives, e.g. baskets to carry food, to carry tools, to carry grasses to do more weaving with.

We used some weaving frames to start going over and under with the grasses that we picked from our school gardens. As you can see in the pictures, we did lots of weaving and could really see our progress. We look forward to seeing them on display in the front office area.

Squiggle Art

We have been very creative and made some ‘squiggle art‘ pictures.

We all started with the same squiggles on our page and then created lots of different pictures. Then we used the Chatterpix app to make our pictures talk! We explained what each picture was showing and how we created it. Our last step was to share these pictures with the families in our class via Seesaw.

Here are our Squiggle Art clips.

Morning Gardening

This morning we had another fantastic gardening session with Kate.

We had 3 projects to complete:

  1. Set up our wicking pot (sub irrigator planters).
  2. Place our newly made garden signs into the garden beds. We designed these using Maker’s Empire software and printed them on our 3D printer.
  3. Water and fertilise the garden beds with the worm wee  from our worm farm.

We have made our wicking pots and have them stored outside our classroom – just to keep a close eye on their progress. We’ve planted lettuce or radish seeds.

As you can see by our photos we had another fun and inspiring morning in the garden.

About Us via Pic Collage

This week we started using the Pic Collage app. This is a wonderful app that allows users to create collages of pictures and words to create a document.

Today we created a collage about ourselves, including our values, likes /dislikes and how we like to learn.  We think these are a great collection of information about our class.

SRC Reps

Today we elected our new class SRC reps for Semester 1.

We would like to congratulate all of the people who chose to make a speech today – you all spoke very clearly and presented lots of interesting ideas to the class.

Congratulations to Ashlyn and Flynn! They will be our reps for Semester 1.

Our back up reps are: Louis and Nicole. Congratulations to them too.

Christmas Craft Morning

Last Thursday the Year 2 classes held our annual Christmas Craft morning. This is a very creative and busy time for all of the students involved. Each Year 2 class had 3 detailed craft activities set up and our students worked their way through a variety of them.

Some of the items we created were:

  • threaded Christmas stockings
  • glass jar candle holders
  • peg reindeers
  • Christmas wreaths
  • Snowmen made with wooden circles
  • Popstick trees or decorations
  • Santa faces using our hand prints
  • paper chains….just to get us started.

We were very lucky to have a large number of volunteers to help with each activity – thank you so much to all of the mums, dads, aunties, nannas and special family friends who were able to come along.

Craigburn’s Got Talent Final

Today we held our annual Craigburn’s Got Talent Final. It’s one of the major highlights for our school year.

Here are all of the finalists.

Through the auditions there were over 80 different acts vying to make the final. We were pleased to see that our class had to groups make the Final.

One item was a dance by Amity, Emma and Natalia and they performed a dynamic and amazing dance. The audience just loved it!

The second item from our class was JC Pads – Jesse and Cooper created and performed a great musical item using the Super Pads app on their iPads.

Everyone who performed today should be very proud of their efforts. They were very brave to perform their item – we had lots of variety. There were dances, singing, Super Pad music, gymnastics, violin and piano performances…just to name a few!

We’d like to congratulate all of the winners – what a fantastic achievement.

These are the performers from today’s show.

Here are the clips from the dance item and Super Pad item.
