Bookweek Celebrations

This week was Bookweek. This is a special week in schools as we read all of the books that have been shortlisted for the 2016 Bookweek celebrations and do lots of classroom activities that relate to these books.

Today, we had a special assembly to see which books were the winners for Bookweek 2016 and to see that different costumes from every class in our school.

Here are all of the people from our class who dressed up in different costumes – we had a very wide variety of costumes! Some of the costumes were: Harry Potter, Darth Vader, Matilda, Peter Pan, Elsa from Frozen, Horton, Mr Wonka, Catwoman, The Mad Hatter….the list goes on. We’d like to say a huge thank-you to our families for helping with our costumes – we love your support!

Book week Dress Up Day

As a part of our Bookweek celebrations each student in our class was asked to bring along a book to share and read with a small group.

This was an exciting opportunity to share a book that each student loved and was important to them. We had quite a large variety of books brought in – picture books, novels, non fictions texts – all very special to each person.

Everyone read their books with confidence and in a clear way – we loved hearing why their books were important to them.

Bookweek – Connect to Reading

Today we had a Bookweek assembly. Every student in our school was asked to dress up as a book / movie character. Our SLEG students hosted the assembly and each class had a turn at walking around all of the students and showed them their costumes.

We loved some of the costumes we saw. Our photos start with our class and then show some from different students in our school.

Bookweek Celebrations

Last week we did a variety of activities to celebrate Bookweek.

We did lots of reading of the Bookweek books, reading activities in our class each day, book making of our own and the most fun activity was the dress up day on Friday. All of the R-3 students were invited to come dressed as their favourite book character. We had some incredibly creative costumes arrive in the morning – lots of Princess, Sleeping Beauty, Minecraft characters, Big Nate, the Cat in the Hat, a nurse, Batman and many many more. We’d like to say a huge thank you to our parents and caregivers who helped each of the students with their costumes.

After lunch on Friday the children acted out their book characters – we loved watching the presentations!

Here’s some photos of our week.

Sharing Picture Books

As a part of our latest inquiry unit we are learning all the different ways stories can be told. We kicked off our inquiry by bringing in our favourite picture book to share with a small group.

We needed to remember the important skills of reading a book to others, like-

  • speaking clearly
  • using expression to make the story sound even more interesting
  • showing the audience the pictures
  • stopping at full stops and taking a breath – don’t rush a good story
  • asking what people understood from the story – checking for understanding.

We’ve been learning about these reading skills through our Daily 5 work.

We had a huge variety of books brought in – it’s always interesting to see what kinds of books are interested in sharing.

This was also a great way to prepare for Bookweek, which is this week. There’s lots to see and do in our Library with Mrs Langham.

Here are photos from our Sharing time reading activity last week.

What books can you recommend to us – we love to hear about new books to read.

Bookweek 2012

Last we we celebrated Bookweek in lots of different ways.
We read lots of the Bookweek books, worked with Mrs Langham in the Library (we read a Bookweek book called A Bus Classed Heaven and presented ourselves on a bus as community members – linking to our current inquiry unit), presented our learning at the whole school assembly, held a book sale – advertising books to our classmates and modelled this book sale for Miss Hunt’s Year 2 class, Paul read his own book called “A Sharing Community” at the assembly, we brought favourite books from home to share with our classmates and had a dress up day on Friday – we came dressed a book character fro on of our favourite stories.

Here are lots of photos showing you our fantastic week. We had so much fun celebrating books!

Bookweek 2012

This week is Bookweek. The Children’s Book Council of Australia hold an annual competition to see which is the best book in a variety of categories. There are a number of books nominated in different sections and then the judges vote for a winner.

Our Library is having every class visit the Library this week to work with Mrs Langham on lots of different Bookweek activities. Every year level is doing something different. Stay tuned for some photos later in the week, after our visit on Thursday.

We have been reading lots of the books in the lead up to Bookweek and will be having a dress-up day this Friday. We are able to dress as any character from a book – our imaginations are running wild!!! We will be showing our costumes to the rest of the school during our whole school assembly on Friday morning.

Here’s a poll for you to vote on your favourite book for the Early Childhood Books. Please vote for the book you enjoyed reading.
